Why Tylenol Can Be A Better Option:
- #1 Doctor Recommended Pain Relief brand for those with stomach problems.
- TYLENOL® will not upset the stomach the way naproxen sodium , or even Ibuprofen can.
- TYLENOL® can help relieve your pain while being gentle on your stomach.
- TYLENOL® can be taken on an empty stomach.
- TYLENOL® may be a safe over the counter pain reliever for those with a history of stomach bleeding, stomach ulcers, or stomach problems such as heartburn.
- TYLENOL® is not an NSAID. NSAIDs can cause stomach ulcers and an increased risk of severe stomach bleeding.
Medication To Prevent Ulcers
Various medications can lower the risk of getting a peptic ulcer. These include, in particular, drugs called proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers. Both of these types of drugs reduce the production of stomach acid. In Germany, the most commonly used PPIs are omeprazole and pantoprazole. The H2 blocker that is normally used is ranitidine.
The hormone-like drug misoprostol is sometimes used too, although less often. One of the things misoprostol does is increase the production of gastric mucus, which helps protect the stomach wall. In Germany, misoprostol is available as a combination drug together with the painkiller diclofenac.
Celebrex For Ankylosing Spondylitis
Celebrex is FDA-approved to treat ankylosing spondylitis in adults.
AS is a type of arthritis where there is bone fusion in the spine. AS mainly affects the lower part of the spine, where it joins the pelvis. But AS can also affect parts of the body, such as the shoulders, hips, ribs, heels, hands, and feet. The condition runs in families but is more common in young men.
With AS, you have inflammation in your spinal joints. The inflammation can damage the joints and cause new bone to form. Over time, the new bone growth can fuse the vertebrae together. AS can cause pain and stiffness that typically starts in the lower back and buttocks. Many people with AS also have other symptoms such as fatigue, bowel inflammation, and eye inflammation.
Effectiveness for ankylosing spondylitis
Celebrex is a commonly used NSAID thats well accepted as an effective treatment for AS. It reduces pain and stiffness, helping to improve daily functioning in people with this condition. The American College of Rheumatology recommends NSAIDs such as Celebrex for treating AS.

How Do Ulcers Develop
NSAID usage isnt the only reason ulcers develop in the stomach or upper area of the small intestine. Another common culprit is a bacterial infection caused by Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori. And although NSAIDs and H. pylori infection are independent risk factors, Staller said, they can work together to increase a persons chances of developing ulcers.
Dingells case appears to be more directly tied to taking ibuprofen, however. The saga, as she calls it, started months ago, when a bothersome dental implant led to a bone infection in her jaw. After she had jaw surgery in January, the lawmaker, who has been outspoken about the dangers of opioids and narcotics, instead opted to take Motrin for pain relief.
Soon, Dingell said, she was regularly downing 800 mg morning and night, which continued long after the initial surgery. By around March, Dingell said, her doctors started to raise concerns about how much ibuprofen she was taking.
The doctors warned me, she said. They told me that taking it for this long, they wanted to watch me closely, and I thought I was invincible.
Ibuprofen and other pain relievers such as naproxen, or Aleve, reduce your bodys ability to make a layer of mucus that protects the lining of your stomach from gastric acid, said Christian Stevoff, clinical practice director in the division of gastroenterology at Northwestern Universitys Feinberg School of Medicine.

Stories From Other Readers:
Anonymous shared this story about Voltaren Gel:
My doctor gave me Voltaren gel samples to try for joint pain. When I looked at the warnings I asked about them. He waved them off, saying They HAVE to say that because its an NSAID.
He said the gel was better because it wouldnt affect my stomach. I did fine on the samples, and paid $167 for a prescription for several big tubes of Voltaren. As always, I was using a very low dose, less than half the recommended dose and only once or twice a day.
After a couple weeks, I woke up with severe stomach pain. My stomach began to feel pretty awful in general. I asked my pharmacist and he said the gel gets into the bloodstream, and goes everywhere in the body. It causes all the side effects of any oral NSAID, i.e., everything listed on the box as a warning was true.
Yes, it was causing my stomach pain and who knows what else.) Thats $167 down the drain. I cant use the stuff. I tried a couple times later to just use a tiny dab or two of it, and it upset my stomach again
Brenn reports a similar problem:
I tried the Voltaren gel because oral NSAIDs cause extreme stomach distress, acid reflux, and most frightening, atrial fibrillation. My cardiologist said it was an inflammation in the lining of my heart. Using the gel caused the same problems in both me and my neighbor. If I only use a small amount, occasionally, the symptoms are mild, but it really doesnt do much for relief.
Proton Pump Inhibitors Lower The Risk Of Peptic Ulcers
The proton pump inhibitors used in the studies were lansoprazole , omeprazole and pantoprazole . The studies lasted up to six months. They showed that, compared to a placebo, all of these proton pump inhibitors clearly lowered the risk of getting peptic ulcers:
- Without a proton pump inhibitor, 36 out of 100 people developed an ulcer.
- With a proton pump inhibitor, 14 out of 100 people developed a peptic ulcer.
In other words: Proton pump inhibitors prevented the development of NSAID-related peptic ulcers in 22 out of 100 people.
Proton pump inhibitors may cause headaches, diarrhea, constipation and stomach pain. Only a few people in the studies stopped their treatment early due to side effects.
But it’s not clear whether the long-term use of proton pump inhibitors is safe. It has been observed that hip fractures, spinal fractures and wrist fractures are more common in people over the age of 50 who have taken PPIs in a high dose or for longer than a year.
It is also thought that the long-term use of PPIs might increase the risk of intestinal infections and pulmonary infections or nephritis .

Preventing Gi Damage From Nsaids
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are a type of medicine that relieves pain. NSAIDs inhibit the production of bodily compounds, called prostaglandins, which are responsible for inflammation and sending pain signals to the brain. Reducing prostaglandins results in less pain both from the decrease in inflammation in the injured area and from the fact that fewer pain messages are reaching the brain. Common pain relief medications such as ibuprofen , acetylsalicylic acid , and naproxen are examples of NSAIDs.
While NSAIDs are effective medications with relatively few risks when taken occasionally, they can affect the gastrointestinal tract in long-term users, resulting in complications such as dyspepsia, which can range from mild to severe, and ulcers, which can cause bleeding, perforation, and obstruction. In fact, 15-30% of these long-term NSAID users are at risk of developing ulcer disease, with 2-4% of these ulcers leading to complications.1 Chronic NSAID use can even result in death, with one study estimating 7,000-16,500 individuals in the United States dying from NSAID complications each year.1
Chronic pain can have a massive influence on quality of life, and it affects so many individuals. As many as one in five Canadians experience chronic pain at any given time.2 Medications to treat pain are extremely important, and while NSAIDs can cause problems, other medications also have their own risks and complications.

Celebrex Withdrawal And Dependence
You dont need to be concerned about withdrawal and dependence if youre taking Celebrex.
Certain pain-relieving drugs have a high potential for misuse. Thats because taking them can cause pleasant or euphoric feelings, also known as a high. This can sometimes lead to addiction or dependence on these drugs and withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking them.
Drugs that are associated with these problems are primarily opioid pain relievers, such as codeine, oxycodone , and hydrocodone . Opioids are sometimes known as narcotics. Due to their potential for misuse and dependence, these drugs are controlled substances. This means theyre prescribed and dispensed under federal laws. These laws help ensure that these drugs are used safely.
Unlike opioids, Celebrex isnt a narcotic or a controlled substance. It doesnt cause a high, its not addictive, and stopping Celebrex use doesnt cause withdrawal symptoms. When you stop taking Celebrex, theres no need to taper your dose .
If you have concerns about withdrawal or dependence for any medications you take, including Celebrex, talk with your doctor.
You may wonder how Celebrex compares with other medications that are prescribed for similar uses. Here we look at how Celebrex and ibuprofen are alike and different.

What Side Effects Should I See A Doctor About
You should tell your doctor about any side effect that is troubling you. However, it’s particularly important that you do this without delay if you experience any of the following while taking naproxen:
- Any breathing difficulties or wheezing, or swelling of your face, throat or tongue.

- Severe skin reactions, such as a widespread itchy rash, blistering or peeling of your skin or sores inside your mouth.
What Can I Do To Keep My Kidneys Healthy
Kidney disease caused by analgesics is often preventable Here are some things you can do to help keep your kidneys healthy.
- Do not use over-the-counter pain relievers more than 10 days for pain or more than three days for fever. If you have pain or fever for a longer time, you should see your doctor
- Avoid prolonged use of analgesics that contain a mixture of painkilling ingredients, like aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine mixtures in one pill
- If you are taking analgesics, increase the amount of fluid you drink to six to eight glasses a day
- If you are taking analgesics, avoid drinking alcohol
- If you have kidney disease, consult your doctor before taking an analgesic, particularly NSAIDs and higher dose aspirin.
- Use NSAIDs under your doctor’s supervision if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease or liver disease or if you take diuretic medications or are over 65 years of age
- Make sure your doctor knows about all medicines you are taking, even over-the-counter medicines

Does Drinking Soda Cause Inflammation
Whats more, in a randomized clinical trial in which people drank regular soda, diet soda, milk, or water, only those in the regular soda group had increased levels of uric acid, which drives inflammation and insulin resistance . Sugar can also be harmful because it supplies excess amounts of fructose.
Risk Factors For Peptic Ulcers
Not everyone who regularly takes NSAIDs will also need to take medication to protect their stomach. This will mainly depend on your personal risk of developing a peptic ulcer. Peptic ulcers are more likely to develop in people who
- are over the age of 65,
- have had a peptic ulcer in the past,
- take several different painkillers at once for instance, including acetylsalicylic acid for the prevention of complications following a heart attack or stroke,
- take steroids too,
- take a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor antidepressant as well as a painkiller.
Younger people who don’t have any risk factors aren’t likely to get peptic ulcers. So they hardly benefit from taking medication to prevent peptic ulcers.

Side Effects In Children
Celebrex is approved to treat juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in children ages 2 years and older. JRA is also called juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The drug isnt approved for any other uses in children.
The side effects of Celebrex in children are similar to those in adults. One clinical study looked at the safety of Celebrex in children with JRA who took the medication for 6 months. In this study, the side effects reported were similar to the mild side effects reported in adults who took Celebrex.
In some children, Celebrex can cause a condition called disseminated intravascular coagulation . With this condition, you have abnormal blood clotting throughout your body. DIC has been reported only in children with systemic onset JRA. This is a rare form of JRA that starts with repeating fevers, often with a rash. Children with this type of JRA may need tests to check their blood clotting while they take Celebrex. If your child has systemic onset JRA, talk with your doctor about the risk of DIC.
Clinical studies havent assessed the safety of using Celebrex for longer than 6 months in children. Its not known if the risk of cardiovascular problems* with long-term Celebrex use in children is similar to that of adults.
