Can You Take Excedrin On An Empty Stomach

Can I Combine Nsaids With Other Drugs

Can you take citalopram with food or on an empty stomach

Do not mix one NSAID with another. For example, don’t take aspirin or ibuprofen with any other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. However, your physician may wish you to combine low-dose aspirin with an NSAID for heart attack or stroke prevention. This is an individual decision for each patient, and you should discuss this with your physician, since combining an NSAID with aspirin can increase the risk of ulcer. Acetaminophen, especially in low dose, appears less likely to irritate the stomach than NSAIDs, so in many cases it is reasonable to take acetaminophen along with NSAIDs.

Always read the ingredients listed on the label of over-the-counter products. If acetylsalicylic acid or salicylate is listed, it may be better not to take this with NSAIDs, unless advised by your physician. Keep in mind that Alka-Seltzer, Anacin and some types of Excedrin contain aspirin.

If you are taking medications for high blood pressure, have your pressure checked regularly while on the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. This is especially important within the first several weeks of starting the drug. In some patients, NSAIDs can elevate the blood pressure.

What Do I Do If I Miss A Dose

If you are taking acetaminophen on a regular schedule take it as soon as you remember. However do not take another dose until the appropriate time has passed . If you are unsure what to do, contact your pharmacist. Importantly, you should never take double the recommended dose. If you are taking acetaminophen occasionally for pain or fever, then you can just take the medication when you need it, but no sooner than directed on the box.

Proton Pump Inhibitors Lower The Risk Of Peptic Ulcers

The proton pump inhibitors used in the studies were lansoprazole , omeprazole and pantoprazole . The studies lasted up to six months. They showed that, compared to a placebo, all of these proton pump inhibitors clearly lowered the risk of getting peptic ulcers:

    • Without a proton pump inhibitor, 36 out of 100 people developed an ulcer.
    • With a proton pump inhibitor, 14 out of 100 people developed a peptic ulcer.

In other words: Proton pump inhibitors prevented the development of NSAID-related peptic ulcers in 22 out of 100 people.

Proton pump inhibitors may cause headaches, diarrhea, constipation and stomach pain. Only a few people in the studies stopped their treatment early due to side effects.

But it’s not clear whether the long-term use of proton pump inhibitors is safe. It has been observed that hip fractures, spinal fractures and wrist fractures are more common in people over the age of 50 who have taken PPIs in a high dose or for longer than a year.

It is also thought that the long-term use of PPIs might increase the risk of intestinal infections and pulmonary infections or nephritis .

Why Does Excedrin Work So Well

In Excedrin Migraine, caffeine works to narrow blood vessels in your brain. This decreases the amount of blood that can flow through the blood vessels at one time. This action helps combat headaches, which happen when blood vessels widen. Caffeine also helps relieve a headache if its caused by caffeine withdrawal.

Making A Decision And Considering Alternative Options

How to: Take Diatomaceous Earth on an Empty Stomach

All three types of stomach-protecting medication can lower the risk of getting peptic ulcers. Proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers appear to be very well tolerated. But it is important to make sure the dose of H2 blockers is high enough. H2 blockers can become less effective over time because your body gets used to them. This doesn’t seem to be a problem when taking proton pump inhibitors.

The risk of stomach and bowel problems can be reduced by taking the lowest possible dose of painkillers, and only taking them for as long as necessary. Acetaminophen may sometimes be an alternative to NSAIDs. It doesn’t increase the risk of peptic ulcers and is often just as effective. But it has side effects too: For instance, it may cause liver damage if the dose is too high or if you take it regularly.

It’s best to talk to a doctor about how high your own personal risk of getting a peptic ulcer is, as well as what medications you could take to protect your stomach.

How Should You Think About Taking Nsaids In View Of The Possible Side Effects

Years ago, doctors thought of NSAIDs as being very safe. They still are acceptably safe for many people, but longer-term experience and medical studies have shown that there are definite risks. Think about these things before you start NSAIDs and consider them again if you are taking them for a while:

    • Do you have risk factors for the side-effects of these medications? For example, do you have a prior history of ulcer, a known bleeding problem? Are you are higher-than-average cardiac risk, such as if you have had a heart attack, have high blood pressure or have diabetes. Older people have more GI and cardiovascular risk from NSAIDs.
    • Have you been told of abnormal kidney function? NSAIDs can negatively affect kidney function.
    • Will you be taking NSAIDs for a short or long time? Although heart issues have been described after short uses of NSAIDs, most of the time the problems come with prolonged use. There are situations where long-term use of NSAIDs is appropriate, but in many other situations the need for long-term NSAIDs calls for a discussion with your health care provider about possible alternatives.
