Does Back Pain Cause Stomach Pain

Related Conditions Of Abdominal Pain

Can Back Pain Cause Stomach Pain?

Some of the most common conditions associated with abdominal pain include the following:

Irritable Bowel Syndrome This condition is characterized by symptoms like diarrhea, constipation, and bloating.

Constipation If you arent having regular bowel movements, you may feel bloated and full and experience sharp gas pains in your abdomen.

Peptic Ulcer When a sore develops in the lining of your stomach or upper small intestine, you may experience a burning sensation similar to hunger pangs, along with nausea, vomiting, or heartburn.

Pancreatitis Inflammation of your pancreas may cause sharp, severe pain in the upper middle area of your abdomen, along with nausea, vomiting, or fever. This condition can be either acute or chronic.

Diverticulitis

Home Remedies For Immediate Relief

If your stomach spasms are bothering you, there are ways you can get immediate relief or treat them at home. Some at-home treatments will treat the underlying cause of muscle spasms, while others relax the stomach muscles so that they stop spasming.

If youre having stomach spasms in pregnancy, talk to your doctor before trying any home remedies. Some home treatments may not be safe during pregnancy.

Lower Back Pain And Digestive Health

Q1. Is almost constant lower back pain associated with ulcers or IBS? Pain often keeps me awake at night then at times I can go for days with none. But I have back pain 80 percent of the time. I also have a lot of indigestion, belching, and gas.

Donis, Virginia

Persistent back pain, as you describe, is rare with common gastrointestinal disorders like peptic ulcer disease or irritable bowel syndrome . Ulcers can cause pain, but usually in the front region of the abdomen, known as the epigastrium. When an ulcer is very severe, it can perforate the wall of the duodenum and stomach and cause referred pain to many regions, including the back. However, perforation is a serious complication and would not continue for days or weeks without leading to more severe illness. If perforation is suspected, early imaging and treatment are performed surgical drainage or resection is often required.

IBS leads to bloating and changes in bowel habits , but back pain, while occasionally present in IBS, would not be a characteristic feature.

Other gastrointestinal disorders that can cause back pain along with indigestion include pancreatitis and diverticulitis, and I would recommend that you return to your gastroenterologist to get blood tests and imaging tests to test for these relatively common conditions.

Conditions That Cause Lower Back Pain And Constipation

It is also possible that you do not have IBS, but have constipation, which is also linked to lower back pain. Both constipation and lower back pain are fairly common medical issues, and are often nothing to be concerned about, but if they occur suddenly at the same time, it is advisable to see a doctor, as it might be a sign of a more serious issue. For example, the following are examples of conditions that cause both constipation and lower back pain to occur at the same time:

  • Bowel obstruction

A bowel obstruction is a gastrointestinal condition in which digested material cannot pass normally or as it should through the bowel. A bowel obstruction can be caused by fibrous tissue that compresses the gut, which can develop many years after abdominal surgery. With a bowel obstruction, the blockage in your colon or rectum can create a dull pain that extends from the abdomen to the lower back.

  • Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus. In individuals with endometriosis, the tissues that should be lining the uterus can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or the intestines. Bowel symptoms are very common with endometriosis, as is back pain. This is because endometrial cells can stick to the lower back and the front of the pelvic cavities.

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Liver disorders
  • Peritonitis
  • Urinary tract infections

Treatment Of Groin Pain

Abdominal Pain Radiating to the Back Deeper Causes

After the diagnosis of groin pain, the doctor prescribes taking proper rest along with applying ice and compression wraps. To curb the pain and inflammation, he/she may also prescribe some anti-inflammatory medicines.

Some cases of groin pain are severe. Hence, as soon as you recover, consult with a physical therapist who can recommend exercises to strengthen the abdominal and thigh muscles.

I went back a second time as per my GP and they did a CT scan as my GP thought it could be a kidney stone, but no stone was found. • Severe upper abdominal and back pain
    • Pain that occurs after eating rich foods, fatty foods, or foods with lots of protein
    • Abdominal and back pain that worsens when lying down and gets slightly better by leaning forward

Pancreatitis isa serious illness that can mimic gastritis, stomach ulcers, or duodenal ulcers.

    Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is a life-longcondition in which the bowels develop a sensitivity to stressful situations andcertain foods. IBS is a condition three times more common in women than in men. The abdominal pain of irritable bowel syndrome is often experienced bypeople as abdominal pain on the left side.

IBS can be associated with constipation, the passageof mucus in the stool, or diarrhoea. Sufferers may feel abdominal bloating, weariness, fatigue, backaches, and sometimes an increase in frequency or urgency ofurinating.

The symptoms are often made worse by stressfulexperiences and can last for months and years.

How To Tell If You Have A Hernia

Wondering if the aching in your belly or groin could be a hernia? Hernias are common in both men and women, but symptoms vary. Groin hernias are much less common in women. Hernias may cause some form of discomfort and dont go away on their own, says Gina Adrales, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

The good news? Nearly all hernias can be surgically repaired. Adrales explains how to recognize hernia signs in men and women, the most common types, and what surgery and recovery are like.

What Types Of Medical Professionals Treat And Repair Hernias

Most often, primary care providers are the first to diagnose and treat a hernia. For hiatal hernias, usually medical, not surgical, care is needed and controlling the symptoms of GERD is the primary goal. Occasionally, a gastroenterologist will be involved in the care to assess the severity of GERD. Some hiatal hernias do require surgery and a general surgeon and/or a thoracic surgeon performs the operation, depending upon the location of the organs in the stomach or chest and the size of the defect in the diaphragm.

While primary care providers make the diagnosis of an abdominal wall hernia, it is the general surgeon who performs the operation and repairs the hernia.

When a hernia becomes incarcerated, often the patient goes to the emergency department and the doctor there makes the diagnosis and sometimes can push the hernia back into place . If the hernia is reduced, referral as an outpatient to a general surgeon may be an option. If the hernia remains trapped or if there is concern that the hernia is strangulated, an immediate consultation with a surgeon is required.

Hernias in the neonatal period are often recognized by the pediatrician or family doctor in the delivery suite or the newborn nursery. A pediatric surgeon may be consulted for their evaluation.

Hernias May Create A Visible Bulge

Stomach and Back Pain: Common Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

The most common and the most noticeable symptom of a hernia is a visible bulge below the surface of your skin. When internal organs begin to poke through the abdominal wall, they can create a lump thats visible from the outside.

The location of the bulge varies depending on the type of hernia you have.

Inguinal hernias and femoral hernias may cause a bulge to form on one side of your pubic bone, where your groin and thigh meet. Hiatal hernia could create a bulge near the upper abdomen, while umbilical hernias cause the bulge to develop near your belly button.

A bulge caused by a hernia is generally most visible when youre standing upright. Its generally soft and it can be pushed around. Hernia bulges may disappear when you lie down.

What Organs Can Cause Lower Back Pain

February 12, 2021 By Olivia Pryor

Lower back pain is most commonly associated with problems of the spine, but did you know that inflammation and other problems with your internal organs can also cause back pain? This type of pain usually affects one side of the back, near where the organ is located.

Irritation, inflammation, or infection of any of the organs in the central, abdominal, or pelvic region can produce lower back pain. Lets talk about some of the main organs that can cause this pain, and where you can go for an evaluation and treatment:

    Posture And Back Pain

Sitting for long periods hunched over a desk is not doing your back or health any favors.

Poor posture over extended periods creates stress in the muscle tissues, lumbar joints and discs of the spine. Over time weakening the back and causing pain and discomfort.

But bad posture can impact your health in other ways:

    • Increase risk of arthritis

    Do you slouch while eating?

It’s a bad habit is you do because its probably making your acid reflux worse.

Dr. Kyle Staller | gastroenterologist at Harvard Massachusetts General Hospital

Slouched posture after a meal can trigger heartburn

Slouching puts pressure on the abdomen, which can force stomach acid in the wrong direction. And some evidence suggests that transit in the intestines slows down when you slouch.

If poor posture is a problem find a physical therapist who can design a personalized program of exercises. It should include stretch routines to increase strength and flexibility in the back and core muscles.

    Types Of Abdominal Pain

There are several types of abdominal pain, which are based on how quickly your pain starts and how long it lasts:

    • Acute pain starts over a few hours or days and may come with other symptoms.
    • Chronic pain lasts longer — from weeks to months or more — and may come and go.
    • Progressive pain gets worse over time and often comes with other symptoms.

This treatment option varies depending on the type of hernia and the severity of the injury. For example, open hernia repair requires opening up the body and pushing the hernia back into place. Laparoscopic hernia repair uses smaller incisions paired with a tube to insert repair tools carefully.

With new advances in technology, robotic laparoscopic surgery is now available here in Tennessee. These procedures are far less invasive than open surgery, allowing the patient to recover in less time.

    Acute Pain Vs Chronic Pain

Chronic abdominal pain is pain in the abdomen that occurs continuously or is intermittent and that lasts for at least 6 months. Chronic abdominal pain may be due to a problem in any of the systems located in the abdominal area including the stomach, gall bladder, pancreas, liver, intestines, colon, kidneys, ureter, prostate, or uterus. Acute abdominal pain comes on suddenly and it is severe. The underlying cause of acute abdominal pain may be a medical emergency or life-threatening. Sometimes, patients with this kind of abdominal pain require surgery. Let your doctor know whether your abdominal pain came on suddenly or gradually, whether you experience it all the time or intermittently, and how long you’ve been in pain.

    Duration Of Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain can be brief or long-lasting, depending on its underlying cause. It can be ongoing or recurring, coming and going at what seem like random intervals or with certain activities or behaviors.

How long your abdominal pain lasts, or whether it comes and goes, doesnt necessarily correspond to how severe the underlying condition is.

The majority of inguinal hernias occur in males, with a male-to-female ratio of approximately 7:1. Although the incidence of femoral hernias is higher in women than men, with a ratio of 1.8:1, inguinal hernias are the most common groin hernias irrespective of gender. Incisional hernias are also twice as common in women.

The most troublesome or unsafe entanglement of hernia is the obstructed inguinal hernia. The greater part of the distinctive sorts of hernias has comfortable and basic surgeries though obstructed inguinal hernia is the most complex with significant dangers. This obstructed inguinal hernia is the sort of hernia which cant be disregarded and needs quick surgery.

Recognizing this scenario is very important to immediately proceed with general anesthesia and surgical consultation for successful nonoperative hernia reduction and colonoscope removal. We recommend reattempting colonoscopy after surgical hernia repair or proceed with computed tomography colonography if appropriate for the indication.
