Know The Truth About Weight
When you talk about losing weight, what you usually mean is slimming down. You might want to lose weight around the hips, thighs, belly, and arms. But the odd thing about slimming down is that it doesn’t always mean losing actual weight off the scale.
It’s possible to get thinner without actually seeing a change in your weight. This happens when you lose body fat while gaining muscle. Your weight may stay the same, even as you lose inches, a sign that you’re moving in the right direction. Knowing the difference between losing weight and losing body fat can change how you see yourself and your progress.
A typical scale shows your weight, but it doesn’t tell you how much of that weight is muscle, fat, water, bones, or organs. A bodybuilder’s weight could be off the charts because of extra muscle, but it doesn’t mean they are overweight or fat. Knowing your body composition is crucial information if you really want to get results. Unfortunately, the typical scale doesn’t tell you that.
Another reason scale weight isn’t so reliable is that it changes all the time. You will see weight changes throughout the day depending on what and how often you eat and drink, how often you go to the bathroom, or if you are retaining water.

Add Some Calcium To Your Meals
Increasing your calcium intake does more than just improve the strength of your bonesâit’s also an easy way to keep those extra pounds from congregating around your waist. Researchers in Shanghai found that college students with low calcium intakes who increased their calcium and vitamin D consumption and engaged in moderate exercise lost more visceral fat than the control group. While many people assume that dairy is the best way to boost your calcium intake, there are plenty of vegan-friendly ways to do that very thing, too. Sunflower seeds, oranges, almonds, beans, and green vegetables, like kale, watercress, and broccoli, are all easy non-dairy ways to add calcium to every meal.
Is Belly Fat Or Bloated
Bloating Is Localized While Belly Fat Is Widespread
One easy way to tell the difference between bloating and belly fat is that, with bloating, only the stomach expands due to the excess gas accumulation. You will likely notice other bulges with excess fat, particularly on the abdomen, thighs, hips, and back.

Recovery is just as important as your training, especially during a cutting phase. Since youre putting your body through the tremendous stress of calorie-restriction and heavy weights, you need time to let your muscles recover and rebuild.
While your body secretes growth hormone throughout the day, it peaks at night while you sleep and its also highest when your sleep is deepest. Skimping on sleep, however, will only short-change your muscle growth and repair.

This research shows the difference between aerobic training and resistance training. While aerobic training helps you lose more weight, resistance training is more effective in increasing lean body mass.
Aside from that, aerobic exercises will decrease your total body fat, and thus, will not be good if you only want to shed off belly fat.
This means that for people who want to lose overall weight, you should stick to aerobic exercises. But this does not apply to people who want a flat belly.

Cut Back On Carbs Especially Refined Carbs

Is It Even Possible To Lose Fat Without Losing Muscle
If youve spent some time trying to put on weight and gain muscle, making the decision to shift gears and cut some fat can be a scary thing to do.
If youve gone from weak and skinny to strong and bulky, its easy to become psychologically attached to being a certain weight. It may have taken years of hard work to reach that weight, and much of your self worth and esteem is tied into that number.
You feel a sense of panic when you weigh yourself and see the number on the scale going down. Youre scared of going back to your former skinny self.
You want to look better, which is why you want to get rid of the fat. But you dont want to see months, if not years of hard work go down the pan and lose the muscle youve worked so hard to build.
Is it even possible to lose fat without losing muscle? Can muscle be maintained, or even gained, at the same time fat is being lost?
Heres the good news:
In most cases, you can lose fat without losing muscle. Some people will be able to go one step further and actually gain muscle at the same time as losing fat.
However, while both things can be done at the same time, its extremely rare to do both at the same speed. That is, you wont gain 10 pounds of muscle at the same time as losing 10 pounds of fat.
Its also going to be harder to apply the overload principle to your training, and add weight or reps to your lifts on a regular basis.
Eat In A Slight Calorie Deficit To Lose Fat
As I explained in a previous column, you can’t spot-reduce fat.
The fact of the matter is that if you lose weight, you will likely lose some of your butt.
When I lost 35 pounds, my butt got smaller. It’s inevitable. Because my whole body got smaller. That’s what happens when you lose weight.
But if you want to lose stomach fat, the only way to do that really is by creating a calorie deficit through your diet. If you’re not sure how to calculate that figure, there are various online tools , and then you could try an app like MyFitnessPal to help you get a feel for what that looks like in practice.
To hold on to muscle while losing weight, you need to make sure your calorie deficit is small , and ensure you’re eating enough protein and resistance training, which is what I did when I cut my body fat nearly in half in six months without losing my muscle.
Jason Bone, Head of Strength at London fitness studio Flex Chelsea, explained to Insider that it’s important not to drop your calories too low.
“Bringing yourself into a slight calorie deficit will keep giving you energy for the workouts and the correct proteins for building your booty, but still see you losing weight overall. Too much of a deficit you’ll be low on energy, and in turn, on enthusiasm.”
Not to mention your body will start burning your muscle as well as fat, which isn’t what we want.

When To Talk With A Pro
A certified nutritionist or dietitian can help you align your eating and exercise plan with your overall goals.
Working with a professional may be especially beneficial if your eating plan affects any existing health conditions, or if you have special dietary needs. Its also useful for people who are unsure of exactly how to change their eating habits.
A personal trainer can help you create an exercise routine thats in line with your goals and fitness level. Theyll also make sure youre using the correct weights and using proper form.
As you progress, a pro can continue to tailor your program in a way that helps you advance. Theyll also motivate you and provide accountability.
If working with a professional isnt possible, consider finding a buddy with whom you can create an eating and fitness plan. Together you can help each other succeed.
Is Putting On Weight Just Part Of Getting Older
Its true that as we get older, we need less calories to keep our body working well. Changes to our hormones during this time mean that we start to lose muscle and gain fat. This makes it harder to keep to a healthy weight but thats not to say its impossible. In fact, people who are aged 65 and over are healthier than their ancestors and are living longer.
Although you cant escape the ageing process, when it comes to managing your weight, there are other factors that are within your control. These include your lifestyle habits, choices and behaviours and how active you are.
