How Long Does Stomach Cancer Take To Develop

Does Stomach Cancer Affect Men And Women Differently

How long does cancer takes to develop ? | how much time cancer takes to develop

It is important to look for signs of stomach cancer in adults over the age of 55. However, it most commonly affects those in their 60s or 70s. While it is crucial to be aware of the signs of stomach cancer in females, men are more likely to develop stomach cancer. In 2020, 16,980 men and 10,620 women are projected to be diagnosed with the disease. Men have a lifetime risk of 1 in 95 of developing stomach cancer, while women have a 1 in 154 risk. The signs of stomach cancer in men are typically no different than in women.

Certain Factors Affect Prognosis And Treatment Options

The prognosis and treatment options depend on the following:

  • The stage of the cancer .
  • The patients general health.

When gastric cancer is found very early, there is a better chance of recovery. Gastric cancer is often in an advanced stage when it is diagnosed. At later stages, gastric cancer can be treated but rarely can be cured. Taking part in one of the clinical trials being done to improve treatment should be considered. Information about ongoing clinical trials is available from the NCI website.

How Is Gastric Cancer Staged

The stage of the cancer can be determined after your testing is done. The staging of a cancer describes how much cancer has grown within the stomach as well as if it has spread. This is very important in terms of what treatment is offered to each individual patient. The staging system used to describe gastric tumors is the “TNM system”, as described by the American Joint Committee on Cancer. The TNM systems are used to describe many types of cancers. They have three components

  • T-describes the size/location/extent of the “primary” tumor in the stomach.
  • N-describes if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes
  • M-describes if the cancer has spread to other organs .

The T, N, M, are then combined to come up with a stage from 0-IV, with IV being the most advanced. The staging system is very complex. The entire staging system is outlined at the end of this article. Though complicated, the staging system helps healthcare providers determine the extent of the cancer, and in turn, make treatment decisions for your cancer.

Testing For Other Conditions And Cancers

Individuals who have hereditary diffuse gastric cancer syndrome and Lynch syndrome have a drastically increased risk of stomach cancer. Recognizing these and taking precautions after receiving a doctors advice can reduce the risk.

People with close family members who have had stomach cancer and those who had invasive lobular breast cancer before the age of 50 years might benefit from genetic testing.

If a test shows changes in the CDH1 gene, a doctor may recommend removing the stomach before cancer develops.

Current research is looking into the possible cancer links of chronic Helicobacter pylori infection in the stomach lining.

Early studies suggest that treating H. pylori infection with antibiotics can reduce the risk of stomach cancer, although further research is necessary.

Stomach cancer occurs most often in older people. About 60% of people who are diagnosed are older than age 64. The average age of diagnosis is 68.

The incidence of stomach cancer varies in different parts of the world. In the United States, incidence rates dropped by 1.5% annually in the last decade. Part of this decline may be due to the use of infection-treating antibiotics. These medicines can kill H. pylori . However, stomach cancer is still one of the most common cancer types and one of the top causes of cancer deaths worldwide.

Treatment For Stomach Cancer

Tests and procedures used to diagnose gastric cancer may include an upper endoscopy, imaging tests such as a CT scan, and a special X-ray called a barium swallow test. Sometimes, exploratory surgery is needed to fully understand the stage and extent of gastric cancer, which helps determine the best course of treatment.

There are a few main options doctors use to treat stomach cancer. These options include:

  • Chemotherapy

Laser Therapy Or Stent

How long does it take for Cervical Cancer to develop? – Dr. Neelesh Reddy

Laser therapy can be used to destroy tumors, stop bleeding, or alleviate a blockage in the stomach.

This can sometimes be accomplished without surgery.

The doctor inserts a long, flexible tube called an endoscope down the throat and into the stomach to deliver the laser beam. This is also called endoscopic tumor ablation.

Hollow tubes called stents can sometimes help. By placing a stent between the stomach and esophagus or between the stomach and small intestine, food will be able to pass through unobstructed.

Types Of Cancers That Are More Likely To Go Undetected

Some cancers are more easily detected than others. For example, certain types of skin cancer can be diagnosed initially just by visual inspection though a biopsy is necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

But other cancers can form and grow undetected for 10 years or more, as one study found, making diagnosis and treatment that much more difficult.

This table provides an overview of common cancers that often display little or no symptoms early on, and how theyre typically detected and diagnosed:

What Is Stage 4 Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer is cancer that starts in the stomach. Its staged according to how far it has spread at the time of diagnosis.

In stage 4, stomach cancer has spread through tissue, the bloodstream, or lymph system to distant parts of the body. Cancer may be found in organs such as the liver, lungs, or distant lymph nodes.

Stage 4 is also called advanced stomach cancer.

Knowing the stage of stomach cancer helps determine treatment options. It also provides a general overview of what to expect.

Testing For Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer is usually discovered when someone goes to the doctor after noticing some of the symptoms shared above. To confirm the diagnosis, the following tests can be administered:

  • Upper endoscopy
  • Computed tomography scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging scan
  • Positron emission tomography scan
  • Chest X-ray
  • Laparoscopy

When Do Signs And Symptoms First Appear

Document

Typically, cancer signs and symptoms first appear when the cancerous tumor or mass has grown large enough that it begins to push against nearby organs and tissue, blood vessels, and nerves.

This can lead to pain, a change in how the nearby organs function, or both. A brain tumor pressing against the optic nerve will affect vision, for example.

Some cancers are fast moving, such as liver and pancreatic cancers. Prostate cancer, however, is usually slow moving. This is why many older men with prostate cancer forego treatment theyre more likely to die with prostate cancer than because of it.

Screenings for certain cancers should be part of your normal preventive healthcare. These include cancers of the:

  • prostate
  • cervix
  • skin

Your age, sex, family history, and your own medical history will dictate when routine screenings should begin and how often they should be done.

If youre concerned about symptoms associated with various cancers, then you shouldnt hesitate to see your doctor. You can connect to a physician in your area using the Healthline FindCare tool.

What Is Gastric Cancer

Gastric cancer tends to develop slowly over many years. Before cancer develops, pre-cancerous changes often occur in the lining of the stomach but rarely cause symptoms and can go undetected.

There is much cause for hope if gastric cancer is found early, however the outlook is poor if discovered at an advanced stage. Thats why Gastric Cancer Foundation is dedicated to advancing gastric cancer research. Its only through long-term research that we will be able to find a cure.

Prognosis And Survival For Stomach Cancer

If you have stomach cancer, you may have questions about your prognosis. A prognosis is the doctors best estimate of how cancer will affect someone and how it will respond to treatment. Prognosis and survival depend on many factors. Only a doctor familiar with your medical history, the type, stage and characteristics of your cancer, the treatments chosen and the response to treatment can put all of this information together with survival statistics to arrive at a prognosis.

A prognostic factor is an aspect of the cancer or a characteristic of the person that the doctor will consider when making a prognosis. A predictive factor influences how a cancer will respond to a certain treatment. Prognostic and predictive factors are often discussed together. They both play a part in deciding on a treatment plan and a prognosis.

The following are prognostic factors for stomach cancer.

How Is Gastric Cancer Treated

Surgery

At this time, curative treatments for gastric cancer involve surgery . The smallest amount of surgery that is possible while still taking out all of the cancer is what is usually done. Often, tumors that are in the part of the stomach closest to the esophagus are treated with a gastrectomy . A total gastrectomy is often used to also treat cancer involving the entire stomach.

A partial gastrectomy is the removal of only part of the stomach. Partial gastrectomies may be used in those with tumors that are further from the esophagus, in the distal portion of the stomach.

It is important that an experienced surgeon performs this procedure, as it is a difficult surgery. When the stomach or a portion of the stomach is removed, the two ends must be rejoined. This is done in various ways, with the goal being to eliminate as many of the side effects of the surgery as possible. Side effects can include not being able to eat larger meals and dumping syndrome. Dumping syndrome occurs when the small intestine fills too quickly with undigested food as a result of the stomach being removed. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, and even shortness of breath. These symptoms can usually be managed with changes to the diet.

Surgery For Stomach Cancer

Surgery is often part of the treatment for stomach cancer if it can be done. There are different kinds of surgery. The type thats best for you depends on how big the cancer is and where it is in the stomach. Surgery might be done for different reasons. If the cancer is small enough, it might be done to try to remove all of it. If the cancer cant be removed, surgery might be done to help prevent or relieve symptoms. Ask your doctor what kind of surgery you will have and what to expect.

Side effects of surgery

Any type of surgery can have risks and side effects, such as bleeding or infections. If part or all of your stomach is removed, it can affect the way you eat. What Screening Tests Are Available

Currently, there is no approved routine screening test for gastric cancer in the U.S. If you have known risk factors such as atrophic gastritis , you may want to speak to your provider about the need for screening tests. Currently, screening for H. Pylori is not recommended in areas with a relatively low incidence of gastric cancer, such as in the United States.

In Japan, where gastric cancer is much more common, screening programs are used. A variety of tests have been used in these screening programs including upper gastrointestinal series , upper endoscopies, Helicobacter pylori antibody test, and serum pepsinogen tests.

Families with a known HDGC mutation CHD1 should speak to their provider about having a screening endoscopy .

Signs Of Stomach Cancer

People dont usually notice early stomach cancer symptoms because they resemble symptoms of other health problems. Stomach cancer symptoms are the same in both men and women, although men are more likely to get the disease.

There is no single first sign of stomach cancer, but the first warning signs are usually gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, loss of appetite and abdominal discomfort that lasts for several days.

People no longer feel hungry and ultimately start losing weight without trying. Thats probably the most concerning symptom. Dr. Kevin El-Hayek, surgeon, Cleveland Clinic

How Long Does It Take For A Lung Cancer Tumor To Grow?

Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, begins when healthy cells in the stomach become abnormal and grow out of control. A tumor can be cancerous or benign. A cancerous tumor is malignant, meaning it can grow and spread to other parts of the body. A benign tumor means the tumor can grow but will not spread. Cancer can begin in any part of the stomach. It can also spread to nearby lymph nodes and other parts of the body, such as the liver, bones, lungs, and a womans ovaries.

Most stomach cancers are a type called adenocarcinoma. This means that the cancer started in the glandular tissue that lines the inside of the stomach. Other types of cancerous tumors that form in the stomach include lymphoma, gastric sarcoma, and neuroendocrine tumors, but these are rare.
