These maneuvers raise the esophagus above the stomach and partially restore the effects of gravity. It is important that the upper body and not just the head be elevated. Elevating only the head does not raise the esophagus and fails to restore the effects of gravity.
GERD diet
Certain foods are known to reduce the pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter and thereby promote reflux. These foods should be avoided and include:
Fatty foods and smoking also reduce the pressure in the sphincter and promote reflux.
In addition, patients with GERD may find that other foods aggravate their symptoms. Examples are spicy or acid-containing foods, like citrus juices, carbonated beverages, and tomato juice. These foods should also be avoided if they provoke symptoms.

- Endoscopycan check for problems in your esophagus or stomach. This test involves inserting a long, flexible, lighted tube with a camera down your throat. First, the doctor will spray the back of your throat with anesthetic and give you a sedative to make you more comfortable.
- A biopsymay be taken during endoscopy to check samples of tissue under a microscope for infection or abnormalities.

Stomach acid is important to the digestive system. It helps us process food and it kills harmful bacteria. The stomach makes the hormone called gastrin, which creates hydrochloric acid. When these acid levels increase, it can lead to hyperacidity. Excess stomach acid can range from mild to severe.
Our diet, environment, and even stress can be contributing factors to excessive stomach acid. There are, in fact, relatively simple ways to reduce excess stomach acid or prevent it altogether.
Think About The Food You Eat
There are certain types of foods that will require more stomach acid than others. This is especially the case with fats and proteins.
While your body needs them, it doesnt need as much as you would think. To start with, protein is an excellent way to keep you feeling fuller. It breaks down slowly and is used up by the body over the course of a few hours. If you eat too much, your stomach must work harder to break it down, and that means creating more stomach acid.

According to researchers, elevating the head of the bed can help reduce the episodes and symptoms of acid reflux at night.
- Avoid meals within 2 to 3 hours of going to sleep
Multiple studies have found that having a meal close to sleeping time is linked to a higher risk of acid reflux symptoms at night.
- Sleep on your left side
When an individual sleeps on his/her right side, the lower esophageal sphincter gets covered in stomach acid. This can increase the likelihood of stomach acid leaking through the sphincter and causing reflux. While it may not be entirely practical, however, sleeping on the left side can reduce the risk of acid reflux to a great extent.

Why Antidepressant Withdrawal
Antidepressants work by altering the levels of neurotransmitters chemical messengers that attach to receptors on neurons throughout the body and influence their activity. Neurons eventually adapt to the current level of neurotransmitters, and symptoms that range from mild to distressing may arise if the level changes too much too fast for example, because you’ve suddenly stopped taking your antidepressant. They’re generally not medically dangerous but may be uncomfortable.
Among the newer antidepressants, those that influence the serotonin system selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors are associated with a number of withdrawal symptoms, often called antidepressant or SRI discontinuation syndrome. Stopping antidepressants such as bupropion that do not affect serotonin systems dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors seems less troublesome over all, although some patients develop extreme irritability.
Having discontinuation symptoms doesn’t mean you’re addicted to your antidepressant. A person who is addicted craves the drug and often needs increasingly higher doses. Few people who take antidepressants develop a craving or feel a need to increase the dose.
When To See A Doctor
You should see your GP if:
- You are suffering from chronic acidity that is only temporarily relieved by over-the-counter medicines or changing your diet.
- You experience difficulty swallowing.
- You suffer from persistent nausea or vomiting.
- You have poor appetite or difficulty eating, inadvertently resulting in weight loss.
- Heartburn can occur frequently and interfere with your routine if this is the case, you may be suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease .
You should consult your GP as soon as possible as untreated GERD can seriously damage your esophagus or it can indicate some more serious medical conditions such as peptic ulcers, irritable bowel disease, or rarely stomach cancer.
