How To Help Puppy Upset Stomach

How To Prevent Your Dog From Getting An Upset Stomach

Tips for Treating Your Dog’s Stomach Issues

Put away foreign objects Dont leave things lying around the house for them to eat. This includes socks, small pieces of toys or bones, or other objects that could block their GI tract. If you were too late to stop them from eating something foreign, you can give them hydrogen peroxide to force vomiting and try to keep it from hitting their GI tract.

Try a special diet Speak with your vet about finding a food designed for dogs with sensitive stomachs or food allergies, or try adding probiotics to their diet to promote good bacteria in your dogs gut.

These Could Indicate A Medical Emergency So Call Your Vet Right Away

If your dog simply gets sick every once in a while and you dont suspect an emergency, try the following:

  • Fast your dog for 12 to 24 hours. Many people feel bad doing this but your dog needs to empty his stomach. Feeding during a bout of diarrhea or vomiting can prolong their discomfort. I promise, an otherwise healthy dog can go a day without eating she cant hold a grudge for too long!
  • Always make sure fresh water is available at all times!
  • After fasting, feed a bland diet. Our go-to is 1 part boiled, skinless, boneless chicken breast to 2 parts boiled rice . Do not use any oil, salt, seasoning, or any other additives. Feed your dog very small portions 3-4 times a day for the next 5 days or so, gradually increasing the amount to their normal daily portion.
  • Continue feeding the bland diet until your dog returns to normal, then add on a couple days. Gradually incorporate your dogs normal food. Start with ¼ normal food with ¾ chicken and rice, then ½ and ½ and so on, until youre feeding as usual again.

Simple Proteins And Rice

Giving your dog a food source that is easy todigest can help get their appetite back and their system on track. Simplestarches like white rice and millet are natural for your pet to digest while alsobeing soothing. Likewise, adding protein like steamed fish or turkey, cookedegg, and cottage cheese can fuel them with vital nutrients for a swiftrecovery. Complex meats like beef and pork should be avoided until your dogssymptoms are resolved as they can be difficult to digest.

Need A Dog Upset Stomach Remedy

Do you have a dog with an upset stomach? Heres how to help.

Diarrhea is quite common in dogs. Their questionable dietary preferences sometimes result in your dog feeling a bit under the weather. Unpleasant messes in the house and plenty of trips outside to potty are no fun for you, or for your dog.

Fortunately, most cases of diarrhea are relatively short-lived and self-limiting. If your dog still has a bit of an appetite, adding some pumpkin to its meals can potentially alleviate diarrhea or constipation.

Common Causes Of An Upset Stomach In Dogs

Your dog may have an upset stomach because they ate something they shouldnt have. Did you clear away the supper dishes and leave steak bones on the plates? Is the kitchen garbage secure? Some dogs cant help themselves when theres leftover people food within reach!

If youve had Riley or Rosie for a romp in the park, they may have ingested something when your back was turned. Dogs are masters at concealing what they shouldnt be doing.

The thing here is that outside substances could be poisonous or otherwise harmful. Plus, theres a list of people foods that dogs cant eat so if theyve eaten something like a discarded chocolate bar, it can be toxic.

There are other reasons for an upset stomach in dogs. For example, a dog may have a digestive tract problem due to an imbalance in gut bacteria. Digestive problems can occur when a dog doesnt have a balance of good and bad bacteria in their stomach.

Another explanation for an upset stomach in dogs is sensitivities or allergies to particular foods. A dog upset stomach can be caused by these chronic conditions.

What Kind Of Pumpkin And How Much Should I Give My Dog

Its very important that you speak with your vet to make sure how much pumpkin you should give your dog. The amount will vary according to the dogs size.4

You should always make sure you only give your pooch plain, canned pumpkin. And that pumpkin should be free of any additives that could make a dog upset stomach worse. Never give your dog canned pumpkin pie filling. It often contains a toxic ingredient known as xylitol. Even a small amount of xylitol can be fatal to a dog.5

Also, its an unfortunate fact that canned pumpkin can spoil rather quickly once you open it. If you choose to keep the pumpkin in your refrigerator after giving it to your dog, always check it carefully before giving it to him or her again. At best, canned pumpkin lasts a matter of days in the fridge once its opened. Consider scooping the unused pumpkin in an ice tray and keeping it in the freezer. You can take out a block and give it to your dog once it thaws.

Chances are, even though your pup is making the ugliest noises while throwing up, or even stinking up wherever it is going potty, it is still a ball of nuclear energy, playing around like nothing happens well, until it needs to release whatever is inside it.

Diarrhea and vomiting are quite common ailments that your dog will experience in its life. You only need to monitor the frequency and whether it is improving. In most cases, an upset stomach is something that gets better by itself.

However, it can get difficult as the pup may develop serious issues. If the frequency of the vomiting and diarrhea increases or does not go away after several hours, then you should consider going to the vet.

Another thing to note is the energy level of your pup is they are lethargic and they do show other symptoms such as a clearly swollen abdomen, or if blood is present in diarrhea and vomit, you should definitely rush to the nearest vet.

Chewing On & Swallowing Items He Shouldnt

Puppies are a lot of work. They need constant supervision and entertainment. Otherwise, theyll get bored, and bored puppies will find ways to entertain themselves, which can involve chewing on things like your new shoes, chair legs or other objects around the house.

If your puppy manages to break off pieces and swallow whatever hes chewing on , they could potentially cause GI upset, damage or even potential blockage in the stomach or intestines. Watch for symptoms like bloody stool, vomiting, inability to defecate, low energy and even weight loss.

Any of these symptoms warrant a visit to your veterinarian.

To help prevent boredom, make sure your puppy gets plenty of exercise and mental enrichment each day. Playing games and obedience training with your puppy will also help him get plenty of exercise and keep his brain busy too.

Dog Upset Stomach Treatment

The treatment for your dogs upset stomach depends on the condition your veterinarian identifies.

Parvovirus. If they have parvovirus, they will need to be isolated from other dogs and require hospitalization. The veterinarian can give your dog intravenous fluids to rehydrate them and maintain their system’s ability to fight off the virus. Veterinarians might prescribe antibiotics to reduce any bacterial infections that result from the sickness.

Inflammation. For inflamed stomach tissue and conditions that cause a lot of vomiting, veterinarians generally prescribe short-term fasting and lots of fluid intake to make sure your dog is hydrated.

Other conditions. Bloating, cancer, and obstructions require immediate surgical procedures that can range from open surgery to less invasive procedures to remove obstructions.

On rare occasions, an ulcer might need to be removed surgically if it has caused a perforation in part of the gastrointestinal tract.

Common treatment. Vets often suggest a bland diet to treat a dog’s upset stomach. Rice and chicken, or a more specific diet, removes the irritating substances from food to help your dogs digestive system rebalance itself.

Veterinarians will treat your dogs symptoms with medication while they are determining the cause of their stomach problems. Probiotics are a common prescription for a dogs tummy troubles.

Nearly all dogs will experience nausea and diarrhea at some point. Depending on your dog’s diet, age, and temperament, this issue will vary in frequency, extent, and intensity. What If My Dog Does Not Like The Bland Diet

If you do not have any rice and chicken or ground beef or if your dog does not like the bland diet, you can try to feed meat-based baby food with no onion or garlic in it. This is very bland, and most dogs find it tasty. Warming the canned food up or adding a little bit of warm broth may make the food more enticing. Keep in mind though that a lack of appetite suggests he is not feeling very well, which is indicative that a vet visit is a better option than trying to force him to eat.

Quick Look At The Steps For Relieving Your Dog’s Upset Stomach With Home Remedies

  • Determine if you should try to soothe your dog’s upset stomach at home. You should NOT attempt home treatment if your dog is acting lethargic, vomiting continuously, having repeated squirts of liquid diarrhea, expressing bloody stools, or getting dehydrated quickly. Consider that young puppies can dehydrate quickly and that older dogs are vulnerable to excess vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Check your dog’s hydration levels, either by examining their skin elasticity or by checking their gums for color. See your vet immediately if your dog is dehydrated. You will find directions on how to check your dog’s hydration levels below.
  • Fast your dog for 1224 hours, depending on their size and age. See the vet immediately if your dog continues to vomit even after you’ve taken food away.
  • Limit the amount of water your dog drinks to prevent him from getting dehydrated. Though it may seem counter-intuitive, letting your dog gulp water may further irritate his or her stomach. See below for tips on how to avoid this.
  • Feed a bland diet of rice and low-fat meat. Bonus foods could include plain canned pumpkin, a tablespoon or two of yogurt, or probiotics.
  • Monitor your dog closely. After fasting and being fed a bland diet, your dog should have better-formed stools and no more vomiting episodes. Take your dog to the vet if they are acting lethargic or not like their normal selves.
  • If this doesn’t work, go see a vet. It’s possible there is a more serious underlying condition.

When Does An Upset Stomach Require Veterinary Intervention

The need for veterinary intervention for an upset stomach really varies from dog to dog. Short bouts of the condition are a relatively normal occurrence for many dogs. However, if your dog is suffering from belly problems on a regular basis, it could indicate that there is something more sinister going on.

Equally, if your pet is suffering from a bout of upset stomach and is becoming dehydrated despite your efforts to increase their fluid intake, it is important that you seek the advice of your vet immediately. Dehydration can cause irreparable damage to your pets organs, and in some cases, even death.

Watch the pattern of symptoms, which should begin to fade within 48hours. If any of the following occur, you should speak to your vet immediately:

    • Blood in the vomit/stools
    • Rapid breathing
    • Collapse

As his owner, you know your pet better than anyone. If you are concerned, never hesitate to contact your veterinarian for advice.
