You might be feeling restless after abdominal surgery and ready to get back to activity, but it’s important you heal first. Recovery from abdominal surgery requires you to slowly rebuild your stomach muscles. These muscles might have been cut to access the abdominal cavity during a hysterectomy, a cesarean section, or an open hernia repair.
Fortunately, weve come up with a few tips and 6 exercises that you can do at home to help heal abdominal muscles after surgery!
Tighten Your Stomach Muscles
Step 1
Perform exercises that target the abdominal muscles, such as the hundred. Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor. Lift your head and shoulders off the floor while raising your straightened arms about 6 inches off the floor. Pump your arms up and down about 6 inches for a total of 100 times while keeping your shoulders and head off the floor. Lower your upper body to the floor. To challenge yourself further, raise your straightened legs off the floor and hold them at a 45-degree angle throughout the exercise.
Step 2
Tighten and tone your stomach muscles and obliques — the muscles along your sides — with seated trunk rotations. Sit on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Hold a dumbbell or medicine ball with both hands. Lean your torso back about 45 degrees while maintaining a straight line from your head to tailbone. Hold the weight out in front of you at chest level. Bring your torso up 20 to 25 degrees while rotating it toward the left. Reach beyond the outside of your left leg with the weight. Return to the starting position to complete one repetition. Aim for eight to 12 repetitions on each side.

Knee Tucks With Sliders
Place the balls of your feet on towels or sliders, and hold a high plank position. Keep your hands right underneath your shoulders and pull both knees in towards your chest, trying to avoid pushing with the hips and focusing on contracting your abs. Slowly extend back out into the high plank position and repeat for repetitions.

This is the most superficial of the abdominal muscles and typically what people call six pack abs. They key is to target both the lower and upper part of this abdominal muscle. Most people only do crunches which work the upper part and neglect the lower belly, which is where women tend to hold the most stubborn body fat – also known as the belly pouch. View Of Two Belly Fat Types
All belly fat is not created equal. Subcutaneous fat, located just beneath your skin, is a somewhat innocuous substance that produces cellulite. This somewhat helpful fat also streamlines your glucose metabolism. Dangerous visceral fat is located beneath your abdominal muscle and around several vital organs. Through several systemic reactions, visceral fat can contribute to heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea.
This harmful fat has also been linked to additional chronic medical conditions. In women, visceral fat has been connected to breast cancer and a higher incidence of gallbladder surgery.
There’s also a demonstrated connection between dietary habits and visceral fat. An April 2017 study, published in the International Journal of Obesity, tracked the relationship between 2,218 subjects’ eating habits and visceral fat. Researchers found that unhealthy eating habits strongly contributed to visceral fat development.

While women and men can feel abdominal and gluteal muscles contracting at different intervals and a tapping motion, most patients report that the procedure is painless.
Plus, they are able to return to work and go about their day as they normally would, including going to the gym.

Core Changes During Pregnancy And Postpartum
First its important to understand how pregnancy affects the musculoskeletal system. As the belly expands, the abdominals stretch and the back muscles shorten. The connective tissue in the linea alba thins and separates . The ligaments and joints in the pelvis become very unstable. The pelvic floor often weakens under the weight of the fetus.
Even the diaphragm changes to accommodate the growing belly, affecting breath mechanics: The rib cage slides backward out of the way of the pregnancy resulting in short, shallow chest breaths.
As Lauren Doss reminds us, in her blog on post-partum weight loss, things dont just snap back into place after the baby arrives. The postpartum recovery period comes with its own set of physical changes. Many women are sedentary for months as they recover from delivery, which creates even more tightness and weakness. Nursing, lifting and carrying a baby can lead to kyphosis.
When all of these physical changes combine in pregnancy and beyond, Theres a big change in how the muscles interrelate and how women coordinate all their muscles, explains Julie Wiebe, BSc, MPT, a physical therapist who specializes in post-pregnancy. You can have a super strong abdomen and still have poor core stability. Getting back into shape postpartum is not just about strengththe goal should be proper function and core stability.

Fix Your Diet And Calorie Intake
Obesity and overweight people tend to consume more calories than they need or burn in a day. This is also made worse by the convenience of fast food, which is normally quite unhealthy and loaded with extra calories. To lose weight and eventually tighten your core, choose to eat healthier foods. Also, pay mind to the amount of food you consume on a day and go on a calorie deficit.
Reducing your intake by 500 to 1000 calories a day is a great place to start . A calorie deficit can be achieved easily by:
- Opting to have home-cooked meals instead of takeout
- Drinking water instead of soda and other sugary drinks
- Replacing energy drinks and pre-packaged fruit and vegetable juices with fresh fruits and vegetables
Remember that everything should be done in moderation. If you choose to treat yourself, choose to have one slice of pizza instead of three. These small changes to your eating plan will have big results in your weight loss.

Tighten Belly Fat After C
If you’ve recently experienced a C-section delivery, your body will take some time to recover from this major surgery. After at least six weeks have passed, and your physician has given you the thumbs-up for exercise, gradually ease into a gentle workout program. Walking and gentle stretching will get your body moving and your juices flowing. Practicing proper sitting posture will help to rebuild your stomach muscles.
When you’re ready to begin working on that annoying belly fat, focus on strengthening your body’s core muscles. Wall sits, pelvic tilts, full side planks and modified planks are all good bets. Keep conventional planks, sit-ups and crunches off the workout menu until your doctor approves these moves. Finally, work at your own pace, and pat yourself on the back with every small bit of progress.

To Cardio Or Not To Cardio
Many people believe that increasing your cardio is the best way to lose belly fat. But I believe there is a better way. We already know that lifting weights is far more effective at burning calories. Cardio falls short because although it might aid in weight loss, it does absolutely nothing for shaping and sculpting your body. Lifting weights is the only way you can tone and tighten the muscles of your waistline – and thats whats going to give you a smaller waist.
Weve also established that you cant out-train a bad diet and that the key to a smaller waistline is lowering your body fat levels by cleaning up your diet. But that doesnt mean you shouldnt do cardio at all, it just means that it doesnt need to be your primary focus when trying to get a smaller waist.
So, what kind of cardio is ideal to help you lose excess body fat and shrink your waistline? High Intensity Interval Training is best, but only if you are already fairly athletic and have higher levels of muscle mass. If you do this STRONG HIIT workout, youll torch body fat and sculpt curves at the same time. Two sessions a week is more than enough, if you focus on a healthy diet and prioritise lifting weights in your weekly workout regime.
