Is The Purple Pillow Good For Stomach Sleepers

How Much Is A Purple Mattress

The Best Pillow for Stomach Sleepers Review – List of Our 8 Favorites!

The Original Purple mattress is priced about average for the bed-in-a-box industry. Its very similar to popular bed-in-a-box mattresses like Casper and Nectar. It wouldnt be considered a budget tier mattress, nor would it be considered a luxury tier bed.

However, considering the special material this bed utilizes, we actually think the original Purple bed is a pretty good value. The Purple mattress price for a king size mattress comes in at $1,449. Heres how the price breaks down by other sizes:

SIZE
$1,699 $1,770

Unfortunately, Purple doesnt regularly offer coupon codes or promo codes to make their mattresses cheaper. However, they will almost always throw in a gift with each mattress purchase. Be sure to check their website to see what promotion theyre currently offering.

Original Purple Pillow Price

The pillow isnt cheap, but its also not what we would consider egregious. With an MSRP of $109, the Purple Pillow is more affordable than the TempurPedic TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Pillow, but more expensive than the Lull Pillow.

As far as coupons go, you can find them on the official Purple coupons, promo codes, and discounts page located here.

Having said that, the best way to save on the Purple Pillow is to keep an eye out for bundles. If youre already considering purchasing one of the Purple Hybrid 2/3/4 mattresses, for example, they will typically bundle in the pillow for free. So, while this is not a discount per se, it is a way to save money on the entire purchase.

This, of course, only works if you are interested in purchasing a Purple mattress. If youre just looking at the pillow, you generally wont find any discounts or deals on Purple.com for the pillow specifically.

Back Sleepers & Stomach Sleepers

Back sleepers should also enjoy the support of your lumbar region and a bit in pressure relief. For heavier sleepers, you may need to choose a firmer mattress as Purple might feel too soft and people may sink into the mattress too deeply. If you are between 130 to 230 points, this should be a decent pick for you. However, the preferences will differ from person to.

The problem of support is getting more prevalent in stomach sleepers. They will definitely need a much firmer support foundation to stop the accumulation of any pressure points which can cause strain to shoulders, necks, and lower backs. Being a stomach sleeper who weighs morewith a weight of more than 130 poundsis certain to require more firmer mattress.

Even the best pillows aren’t meant to last forever for the best sleep, the National Sleep Foundation recommends replacing a well-used pillow every couple of years. You can tell if it’s time for a new pillow if your pillow is lumpy or flat, no matter how much you fluff it. Robbins also told us that a healthy pillow springs back when you compress it if you fold your pillow in half and it stays put, it’s probably time for a new pillow.

I am mostly a side and stomach sleeper, and tried this pillow out in both positions. Without the Air Booster I never spent the entire night one my side and always woke up on my stomach. It does need a little extra loft for proper neck support when using as a side sleeper pillow. It also felt great as a back sleeping choice and kept my head and neck in a comfortable position.

I did love it on my stomach however, and have pretty much found this to be one of my favorite stomach sleeping pillows ever. Because of this my personal trials were all spent sleeping on my stomach after playing with Air Boost to find a comforting side position. Even though I was able to find one that worked for me, I still would more recommend this pillow for back and stomach sleepers.

Whats Not Good About Purple Pillows

The Harmony Pillow is one of Purple’s newest pillows, but it’s also the company’s most popular option.

As already alluded to, the Purple Pillow is not for everyone. I, unfortunately, fall into the not everyone category in this case. To be blunt: I do not like Purples pillows. Confused? That makes two of us. After hearing everyone elses rave reviews, I still am trying to grasp how these pillows could have flunked so royally in my book.

But after testing more than a dozen pillows, I came to realize there are two key factors in selecting a pillow thats perfect for you : preferred sleep position, and the space between your head and the bed in said position. My biggest issue with the Purple pillows had nothing to do with the materials themselvesit was the height that bothered me. I found both the Harmony and Purple Pillow were too thick for my comfort. When I tried both pillows on my side, I felt my head being pushed upwards which forced my neck and spine out of alignment. Our back sleeper, Sarah, also found the Purple Pillow too high for her comfort.

What We Don’t Recommend And Why:

  • Belly Sleeper Pillow: This thin pillow has a low profile that is made specifically for stomach sleepers. However, even my resident stomach sleeper found it too thin, and if you happen to move to your back or side in the night, you’ll have to fold the pillow in half to get your needed support.
  • Vaya Pillow: I tried this pillow but was perplexed that the pillow I received looks significantly different from the website. I contacted the brand, which claimed that the pillow I received is a newer version, but after many months of waiting for a website update, I still only see the old pillows available. I thought this pillow was far too overfilled, even for side sleepers, and the inaccuracies of what we received versus what’s on the website are concerning.
  • Tulo Pillow: A few of our side-sleeping editors recommended this moderate-height memory foam pillow. We didn’t test it for this guide because it lacks many of the qualities of our top picks. It’s not adjustable or washable, and the company doesn’t offer a trial period or returns of open pillows.
  • Saatva Down Alternative Pillow: Saatva makes two of our top pillow picks, so I was surprised this one was such a miss. It was far too lofty, even for side sleeping, and left my neck in an uncomfortable position. It ended up straining my neck so much that I couldn’t make it through the night before switching back to my regular pillow.

One British sleep survey of a thousand participants found that stomach sleepers, or freefallers, have body language that suggests feeling out of control, like life is happening around them and they are just hanging on for the ride. The freefaller position is described as having the whole body outstretched flat on their stomach, arms at right angles, hands gripping the pillow as though holding on for dear life. And its true that these people are reported to feel more anxious and defensive.

The Purple Pillow comes with two boosters. One is .5 tall and the other is 1 tall. By adding or removing boosters, you can easily adjust the pillows height in order to reach neutral alignment.

Pros And Cons Of Stomach Sleeping

Stomach sleeping presents a mixed bag of pros and cons for sleepers. Spoiler alert: theyre mostly cons.

Pros

Pressure on joints in back and neckNumbnessStiffness

When you lie supine, your spine is strained, which puts pressure on your back and neck joints. Eight hours of joint pressure leads to some long-term consequences to your joints. So, even though youre happy as a little clam sleeping on your stomach, you may not feel its effects on your body for decades.

The mattress belly flop also affects your sleep, as joint paincombined with the intense body heat you generaterouses you from your deep sleep cycle, causing you to toss and turn. You may not even be aware of the constant arousal and the sleep deprivation side effects.

Sleep quality and joint wear and tear are the good news for those worried about their appearance. As comforting as it can feel, squishing your face into your pillow can actually cause the formation and progression of facial wrinkles. Thats more crows feet, mouth lines, flattening of the foreheadand you thought it was the constant facepalms!

But to be fair, stomach sleep has a few benefits. For one, its a great alternative position for those who suffer from snoring and sleep apnea. Stomach sleeping is also a better position than back sleeping for reducing heartburn and indigestion.

What Is Pillow Loft

Loft refers to the height of your pillow, which will determine how far off the mattress it will lift your head. In general, experts recommend a pillow that will keep your head and neck in alignment with the rest of your spine. How much loft that’s needed to accomplish this depends on your sleeping position and individual anatomy. A pillow with an adjustable loft, like our top pick, helps you dial in the perfect loft for your body and sleeping style.

Because they retain your spine in a neutral posture, medium to firm mattresses are the ideal choice for stomach sleepers. This helps to avoid your spine from drooping into the bed, which can lead to back discomfort. Beds with a medium firmness level provide a balanced degree of pressure alleviation and support, whereas hard beds provide the most support possible, according to the manufacturer.

Pillows For Stomach Sleepers

Its the age-old problem for belly sleepers: Should I use a pillow or go straight head-to-mattress? Best answer: You should use the method that aligns your neck and spine.

Some stomach sleepers prefer going pillow-less, but it doesnt always work out. Many of these sleepers start with their head on the mattress, only to wake up sleeping on their arms or hands. You should never trust your arms to maintain your sleeping position. They will move, shift, or fall asleep throughout the night. That wont ensure consistent neck alignmentonly numb noodle arms.

Without a pillow, your head and neck will likely arch down or up, leading to neck pain and poor sleep. But getting the wrong pillow can make things even worse. Oh, the plight of being a stomach sleeper

Stomach sleepers with pillows that are too thin often compensate by adding their arms into the mix. Others reshape overly stuffed pillows by pushing the material away from their heads and forming a small nook, so their heads dont overheat.

Luckily, there are a lot more pillow options these days than just a bag of feathers that flattens immediately and a cotton balloon that sends your head into the stratosphere.
