While the best way to cure an upset stomach from most cases of food poisoning is to let your body rid itself of the bacteria causing your discomfort, over-the-counter antiemetics can come in handy when dealing with nausea and vomiting symptoms caused by motion sickness and certain other conditions. There are two main types of OTC medications used to treat nausea and vomiting:

  • Bismuth subsalicylate, the active ingredient in OTC medications like Kaopectate® and Pepto-Bismol, protects your stomach lining. Bismuth subsalicylate is also used to treat ulcers, upset stomach and diarrhea.
  • Other medicines include cyclizine, dimenhydrinate, diphenhydramine, and meclizine. Limit Coffee Alcohol And Smoking

The caffeine found in coffee does not directly cause stomach pain if you consume it in moderation. However, if you have too much caffeine by drinking coffee in excess, it can lead to dizziness, anxiety, irritability, and problems sleeping. Ultimately, these side effects also cause nausea and stomach pain.

Dont rely on coffee to keep you awake or functional throughout your day. If you want to indulge in coffee, try to limit yourself to one cup per day. Coffee is a diuretic, so it causes you to urinate more frequently. Make sure you drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, which leads to nausea and stomach aches.

Smoking is detrimental to your health, but it also causes stomach pain. Tobacco, nicotine, and smoke damage your vital internal organs. These digestive organs can have a problem processing the food you consume, which leads to inflammation in your stomach lining.

If you have an ulcer in your stomach, smoking will irritate it and could prevent it from healing properly. Stomach ulcers are extremely painful and can cause serious damage if they dont heal. Just like smoke, caffeine also irritates stomach ulcers.

Drinking alcohol in excess will cause stomach problems. The long-term effects of alcohol abuse damage your liver and kidneys, which cause stomach pain and other problems in your body.

When Stomach Troubles Come Reach For The Real Thing

Heres The Real Best Way To Cure An Upset Stomach | TIME

Though ginger ale may be tasty, when suffering from a stomachache you’re better off opting for the genuine article, explains Dr. Vaidya. “Instead of the beverage aisle, I recommend visiting your grocery store’s produce section and picking up some fresh ginger root.”

Simply add peeled slices to hot tea or plain hot water. And if you’re not comfortable handling the raw ingredient, try ground ginger instead.

And remember: Overtaxing your stomach, even with a good thing, will only lead to more distress. A little ginger tea goes a long way, so don’t overdo it. “Drinking small amounts throughout the day is far better than drinking multiple cups in one sitting,” says Dr. Vaidya.

Foods That Help Relieve Nausea

Eating may be the last thing you feel like doing when your stomach is upset, but some foods actually ease the symptoms. Consider giving these a try.

Most everyone has felt queasy at some time, whether it was testing for a college entrance exam, dressing for a first date, or navigating a new parking lot. But nausea takes that unpleasant sensation one step further. In fact, Stephen B. Hanauer, MD, medical director of the digestive health center at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, describes it as the awful symptom we feel when we need to vomit and the outcome is predictable. “You throw up,” Dr. Hanauer says.

Nausea can also indicate a serious emergency, especially if its chronic or accompanied by symptoms like chest pain, severe abdominal cramping, fainting, or confusion. “Call 911 if you faint from nausea or vomiting, and go to the ER if you aren’t able to keep food down,” Hanauer advises. It’s important to find out the cause of your discomfort. “Medications, opioids, inflammation of the stomach and intestine, and brain disorders can cause it,” he says.

For milder symptoms, such as nausea due to morning sickness, eating low-fat foods that are easy on the stomach or drinking ginger ale may help to ward off cold sweats, a sour stomach, and dizziness. Here are some foods that may help.

Take A Look At Your Medications

Certain over the counter medicines like ibuprofen can cause stomach pain, especially if you take them on a regular basis. Always read the recommended dosage on over the counter pill bottles to ensure you can safely use them.

Prescription medication can also be a problem. Often, your prescription will come with instructions for the time of day to take a pill. If you are instructed to take your medicine before, during, or after a meal, make sure you follow those directions to avoid stomach problems.

Sometimes combining multiple prescriptions can be the origin of your abdominal pain or nausea. If you just started a new prescription and its causing you to feel sick or throw up, you should contact your doctor so they can help you come up with a solution.

My Experience Drinking With Sibo And Ibs

Since there isnt a ton of research on how alcohol specifically affects people with SIBO or IBS I think its important to share my first-hand experience.

First off, I really dont drink much just because I do notice the negative effects alcohol has on my gut.

For me, I have noticed that if I drink too much then it can cause diarrhea, fatigue, and weaken motility and gut function. Ive learned that for people who already deal with an intestinal issue, like myself, drinking a lot probably isnt going to be a good idea.

That being said, I am human and do enjoy going out with friends and socializing. Most of the time I dont drink but there are occasions where Ill have a few drinks if Im feeling up to it.

I have found that if I choose the right drinks and dont overdo them, then my body and gut can usually recover after a day or two.
