What Is The Safest Stomach Acid Reducer

Warnings Of Famotidine And Omeprazole

How To Reduce Excess Stomach Acid And Get Rid Of Gas And Bloating?

Severe GERD symptoms or ulcers may be a sign of gastrointestinal cancer in some people. Additional testing and monitoring may be needed for people who dont respond to treatment with a PPI or H2 blocker.

Famotidine should be used with caution in elderly people or those with kidney problems. Famotidine use can lead to an increased risk of CNS adverse effects such as confusion, delirium, and hallucinations.

Omeprazole tends to have more warnings and precautions associated with it compared to famotidine. Unlike famotidine, omeprazole and other PPIs can increase the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures when used long term.

Omeprazole use, especially in a hospital setting, may lead to an increased risk of Clostridium difficile related diarrhea. One study found that proton pump inhibitors are associated with more risks of serious adverse effects like pneumonia and C. diff infections. The study took data from 71 hospitals and assessed PPI and H2-blocker use in a specific population of patients.

Proton Pump Inhibitors Reduce Stomach Acid

Proton pump inhibitors reduce stomach acid. But that acid in your stomach is there for a reason: Not only does it help break down the protein in the foods you eat it plays a major role in how your body absorbs calcium.

Is it really any surprise then, after years of taking a PPI that you fracture your hip getting out of the car?

But thats not all

Ways To Reduce Stomach Acid Naturally

List of Top 10 Best h2 blocker in Detail

An overly acidic stomach can easily be prevented and treated with a few simple, and very natural, approaches. Dont reach for those over-the-counter antacids just yet try some other natural options instead!

What causes an acidic stomach?

You cant fix something unless you know why it broke in the first place, right? Well, the same goes for indigestion and an overly acidic stomach. Indigestion can be a sign that your body is too acidic, so its crucial to not just ignore it and pop an antacid. In fact, some antacids can weaken the bodys natural stomach secretions over time and can sometimes cause the stomach to produce more acid. Its therefore important to know about foods that cause indigestion and an overly acidic stomach.

Here is a list of things that can cause indigestion:

  • Eating too fast
  • Eating while on the move
  • Not chewing sufficiently
  • Eating too much protein or fat at one time
  • Drinking acidic beverages with a meal
  • Eating an excessive amount of animal products at one meal
  • Acidic foods like chocolate, sugar, refined grains, gluten-containing grains, processed foods, artificial sweeteners
  • Sensitivities to citrus, tomatoes, and other naturally acidic foods
  • Too little stomach acid being produced
  • Greasy foods and fast foods
  • Foods youre allergic to
  • Food intolerances
  • Poorly combining your foods

Here are five ways to reduce heartburn naturally and quickly:

Consume apple cider vinegar before a meal

Consume green juice before a meal

Have a green smoothie for breakfast

When heartburn or acid indigestion strikes, you need something that settles your stomach ASAP. Its no fun to walk around feeling like you have your own personal fire-breathing dragon raging in your esophagus, and its even less fun to battle the burn while trying to work, exercise, drive through rush hour traffic, or sleep.

If youre prone to bouts of GI distress, its smart to have a reliable over-the-counter antacid on hand that can provide quick relief. Why? Because these medications can decrease the amount of stomach acid you produce, says University of Missouri Health Care gastroenterologist Yezaz Ghouri, MD.

The stomach normally produces hydrochloric acid to help digest food and kill bacteria or other organisms that may have been ingested along with the food, Dr. Ghouri explains. When there is an overproduction of the acid, it can lead to stomach discomfort.

Absolute Risk For Serious Side Effects Is Low

For many other serious side effects associated with PPIs, the absolute risk is low and the evidence isnt definitive, says Dhyanesh Patel, MD, an assistant professor of medicine at the Center for Swallowing and Esophageal Disorders at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

One study examining the link between PPIs and kidney disease found the drugs associated with up to a 0.3 percent greater risk of kidney disease per patient for each year on the drugs.

Another study found the medicines associated with up to a 1.5 percent greater risk of dementia per elderly patient per year.

And, each year on PPIs was associated with up to a 0.5 percent higher risk of hip fractures for older adults taking the drugs in a different observational study.

These links and connections to several other side effects arent strong enough at this point for patients to steer clear of PPIs just because they have other risk factors, several doctors said.

Elderly patients, for example, might be more prone to side effects associated with PPIs because of multiple chronic health problems that are unrelated to the PPIs and might be tied to their use of other medication, Dr. Patel says.

PPI therapy might be entirely appropriate, but yet may be blamed for any subsequent adverse event, Patel says.

Famotidine Vs Omeprazole: Differences Similarities And Which Is Better For You

| | | | | | |

Famotidine and omeprazole are two common drugs that can be used to treat a number of digestive problems. Whether you are experiencing a duodenal ulcer or symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease , your healthcare provider may recommend a drug like famotidine or omeprazole. These drugs work in similar ways to decrease acid production in the stomach. Although theyre usually found over the counter , famotidine and omeprazole can also be prescribed by a doctor.

Antacids like Tums are often tried first before starting on something stronger like an H2 blocker, such as famotidine, or a proton pump inhibitor , such as omeprazole. Fortunately, famotidine and omeprazole are generic medications that are widely available. While they are both considered acid reducers, they differ in how they work and how theyre used.

Coverage And Cost Comparison Of Famotidine Vs Omeprazole

How To Test For Proper Stomach Acid

Most Medicare Part D plans and other insurance plans will cover generic famotidine tablets. Famotidine can cost a retail price of $100 on average if you dont have insurance coverage. What Are The Differences Between Proton Pump Inhibitors

All PPIs work in the same way, by inhibiting the proton pump. However, there are differences in their propensity for drug interactions, and in the way they bind to the proton pump. This can affect how long they last for.

All the PPIs available in the U.S. are metabolized in the liver by certain liver enzymes . There is a lot of individual variation in the way these liver enzymes work, and experts have identified three categories of people extensive metabolizers , poor metabolizers , and people that sit somewhere in between .

Approximately 3% of Caucasians and 15-20% of Asians are PM. PM take longer to excrete the drug and therefore their response to PPIs is increased several fold. For example, the pH of gastric acid is around 6 in PM after PPIs compared to around 3-4 in extensive metabolizers . Metabolism is also affected in people of an older age and in those with liver disease. Esomeprazole is the only PPI that is well tolerated by people with liver disease. The extent somebody is able to metabolize a PPI can also affect their risk of drug interactions.

When Should You Consider A Ppi

Talk to your doctor if you have symptoms such as trouble swallowing, weight loss, or chest pain. Call the doctor if you dont get better in about two weeks. The doctor will look for signs of problems such as GERD .

If you have GERD, you probably need a PPI. Talk to your doctor if:

  • You have heartburn at least twice a week for several weeks.
  • Food or acid often come back up into your throat.
  • You take antacid or H2 blockers, and you make changes like the ones described on this page, but your heartburn does not go away.

If your doctor thinks you need a PPI:

  • Ask to start with a low dose of generic prescription lansoprazole or omeprazole. You can also get these medicines over the counter.
  • If the heartburn gets better after a few weeks, talk to your doctor about gradually lowering your dose.

Infections Are Clearest Risk

The clearest exception may be infections, which have been consistently linked to PPIs in several large, observational studies over the years.

One three-year study, published in May 2019 in the journal Gastroenterology, randomly assigned more than 17,000 patients to take a PPI or placebo in combination with blood-thinners, and found PPI users were 33 percent more likely to develop enteric infections. These infections develop in the small intestine and are caused by a type of bacteria known as campylobacter. Enteric infections are a leading cause of diarrhea.

More than 900 people would need to take PPIs for over a year for one patient to develop an enteric infection that wouldnt have otherwise occurred, says Paul Moayyedi, PhD, lead author of the study and assistant dean of research at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Patients on PPIs in this study were also more than twice as likely to develop Clostridium difficile infections, but there were only 13 cases and this made it impossible to rule out the possibility that the connection might be due to chance.

So-called C. diff infections can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation in the colon.

Of all the potential safety concerns with PPIs, the risk of infections is one that doctors most consistently say changes how they prescribe the drugs.

Popular Heartburn Drugs Linked To Higher Early Death Risk

Washington University in St. Louis
Millions of U.S. residents take proton pump inhibitors which are widely prescribed to treat heartburn, ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems. Now, a new study shows that long-term use of the popular drugs carries an increased risk of death.

Popular heartburn drugs called proton pump inhibitors have been linked to a variety of health problems, including serious kidney damage, bone fractures and dementia. Now, a new study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis shows that longtime use of the drugs also is associated with an increased risk of death.

Millions of U.S. residents take proton pump inhibitors which are widely prescribed to treat heartburn, ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems. The drugs also are available over the counter under brand names that include Prevacid, Prilosec and Nexium.

For the study, the researchers examined medical records of some 275,000 users of PPIs and nearly 75,000 people who took another class of drugs — known as H2 blockers — to reduce stomach acid. The research is published online July 3 in the journal BMJ Open.

Both PPIs and H2 blockers are prescribed for serious medical conditions such as upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding, gastroesophageal reflux disease and esophageal cancer. Over-the-counter PPIs are most often used for heartburn and indigestion.

Al-Aly emphasizes that deciding whether to take a PPI requires a risk-benefit calculation.

Ppis Linked With A 17% Higher Death Risk

For the new study, Dr. Al-Aly and colleagues examined data from the medical records of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The researchers looked at data available from mid-2002 to mid-2004, a period during which 157,625 people in the cohort received PPI prescriptions from their physicians and 56,842 people received H2 blockers, another kind of acid suppressant.

The scientists clinically followed the participants who were predominantly male, Caucasian, and 65 years old or older for up to a decade.

They used the data to build a statistical model of a clinical trial, which would see the participants randomly assigned to take either PPI or H2 blockers.

This allowed them to estimate that during the follow-up period, there would be 45.2 excess deaths per every 1,000 individuals taking PPIs.

Honing in on the causes of death, the findings revealed associations with cardiovascular disease, stomach cancer, and chronic kidney disease.

The model estimates the death rates for cardiovascular disease to be 88.7 per 1,000 people in the PPI group and 73.3 per 1,000 people in the H2 blocker group.

This scientists saw 4.3 deaths in every 1,000 people from stomach cancer in the PPI group, with 4.6 deaths from the disease in the H2 blocker group in their model. The rates for chronic kidney disease deaths were 8.6 per 1,000 people in the PPI group and 4.4 in the H2 blocker group.
