Take With Or Without Food

Check the label on your antibiotics. Does it recommend taking them with food or on an empty stomach?

In either case, follow the directions. Some antibiotics are better absorbed on an empty stomach, so you dont want to limit their effectiveness. But if the label says, Take with food, taking your pills with a meal might help ease stomach issues.

Beyond the specifics above, good old-fashioned advice for treating diarrhea still applies. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, and use rehydrating beverages high in electrolytes if needed. Avoid alcohol and caffeine if theyre making your diarrhea worse. Keep in mind alcohol may actually cause severe reactions while you are taking certain antibiotics, so check the label for that information, as well. Eat a more bland diet than you might normally eat.

Its better to use caution than get hit with unpleasant side effects.

Common sense would say you are going to disturb the natural balance with antibiotics, Dr. Rabovsky says, so anything else that causes you GI symptoms could make side effects even worse.

Imodium And Other Medications

Below are examples of medications that can interact with Imodium. This section doesnt contain all the drugs that may interact with Imodium.

Before taking Imodium, talk with your doctor and pharmacist. Tell them about all prescription, over-the-counter, and other drugs you take. Also tell them about any vitamins, herbs, and supplements you use. Sharing this information can help you avoid potential interactions.

If you have questions what drugs you shouldnt take with Imodium, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Imodium and medications that can cause an abnormal heart rhythm

Certain medications can cause an abnormal heart rhythm, called a prolonged QT interval. Taking Imodium with these medications could raise your risk for an irregular heartbeat.

Examples of medications that can raise the risk of an irregular heartbeat with Imodium include:

  • certain antibiotics, such as:
  • methadone, which is used for opioid dependence
  • If you take any of these medications, check with your doctor before taking Imodium.

    Imodium and opioids

Opioids include pain-relieving medications such as oxycodone and morphine. But opioids also include illegal drugs such as heroin.

Imodium has a chemical structure thats similar to that of opioid medications. However, Imodium doesnt affect your brain when its taken at the dosage recommended for diarrhea. So it doesnt have the same effects on your body as opioids do.

Diarrhea Might Be A Good Thing

A recent study conducted by Brigham and Women’s Hospital tried to determine whether diarrhea served a useful purpose to your body and its day-to-day functions. The study indicated that it does, indeed. The study was conducted using a mouse that was infected with the rodent equivalent of E. coli. Researchers studied the intestines of the mouse and determined that there was an increase in permeability of the intestinal barrier during the first two days of the infection, before damage could be done. They determined that diarrhea served the useful function of clearing out the digestive tract of the harmful pathogen, which also limited the severity of the infection.

    Is Imodium Gluten Free

Its not known for sure. The manufacturer of Imodium hasnt specified whether the drug is gluten free.

Imodium is available in four different products:

    • Imodium A-D oral solution, which is a liquid
    • Imodium A-D caplets, which are capsule-shaped tablets
    • Imodium A-D softgels, which are liquid-filled capsules
    • Imodium Multi-Symptom relief caplets, which are capsule-shaped tablets

Gluten isnt listed as an inactive ingredient for any forms of Imodium.

However, its possible that Imodium is made in a facility that also makes products that contain gluten. In this case, the manufacturer cant guarantee that Imodium products arent contaminated with gluten.

If you have celiac disease or another condition that makes your body sensitive to gluten, talk with your doctor or pharmacist. They can advise if Imodium is safe for you to take. They may also recommend a gluten-free product for your condition.

    The Power Of Probiotics

It may seem strange: Youre taking antibiotics, so wouldnt probiotics undo the good your treatment is doing?

However, probiotics add helpful bacteria to your digestive system not the bacteria that cause infections. They dont have any effect on the antibiotic treatment. They only treat the side effects.

The thing that has really been shown to help the most with preventing diarrhea is taking probiotics when taking antibiotics, Dr. Rabovsky says. He notes that reviews of studies suggest probiotics are effective both for regular antibiotic-associated diarrhea and for diarrhea related to C. diff. They also seem to help with side effects such as cramping and gas.

Probiotics come in several varieties. The most commonly studied for antibiotic-associated diarrhea are Lactobacillus rhamnosus-based and Saccharomyces boulardii-based probiotics. Probiotics come in capsules, tablets, powders and even liquid form.

With so many options, be sure to ask your doctor for advice before taking any probiotics, as you should for any type of supplement. Probiotics could possibly be harmful for people with immune deficiencies or those who are severely debilitated.

Upset Stomach Heres What To Do

What to do with a stomach upset depends on whether you have vomiting or diarrhoea or both.

    Diarrhoea Only

Here, were talking about watery or true diarrhoea rather than just bowel motions that are loose. Then there are a few steps to follow.

  • The most effective step is to stop intake of all solid food .
  • Focus on getting fluid only intake. This is to replace the normal amount of fluid lost daily as well as that extra amount of fluid lost in the watery diarrhoea. The fluids should be light and contain sugar. So an example of this would be 7-Up or Sprite. If you prefer warm fluids, then tea with a spoon of sugar is best .
  • Imodium tablets are available without prescription which act to slow down the bowel. These are usually taken as follows: two to start with and then one capsule every six hours. These are continued for as long as the diarrhoea occurs and are only stopped when you have taken a light meal of something like tea and toast. If no further diarrhoea occurs after this, then stop the Imodium and over a 24 hour period gradually introduce a normal diet again.
  • If the diarrhoea starts again after trying the light meal, then go back to step 1 above.
  • Vomiting and Diarrhoea

The crucial thing here is to get the vomiting to settle. A trial of Motilium tablets at a dose of two tablets every eight hours may settle the nausea and vomiting. Once this is settled then start taking the measures outlined for the diarrhoea above.
