What Could Be Causing My Stomach Pain

What Happens In An Hsv Infection

My Aching Stomach: Common Causes of Abdominal Pain

Genital herpes virus is passed from one person to another through sexual contact. This happens even if the person with the virus doesnt have symptoms or signs of infection.

Once the virus enters through the skin, it travels along nerve paths. It may become dormant in the nerves and remain there indefinitely.

From time to time, the virus may become active. When that happens, the virus travels back along the nerve path to the surface of the skin, where additional virus is shed.

At this point the virus may cause an outbreak of symptoms. Or it may remain undetected.

In either case, the active virus is easily passed from one partner to another through sexual contact. Even wearing a condom may not protect the uninfected partner. The virus can be present on skin that remains uncovered.

The number of recurrences or outbreaks a person can have may vary.

Gut Feeling: How To Know If Stomach Pain Is Serious

Abdominal pain is the single leading reason for emergency room visits in the U.S. according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, accounting for more than 12 million of the nearly 139 million annual ER visits. Most people call it stomach pain, but it’s not always a stomach problem. Your abdomen holds many other organs, too, including your intestines , pancreas, liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen and appendix.

So its not surprising that, just as with chest pain or a headache, it can be difficult to tell whats really going on in there when your tummy’s not feeling well. Add in other vague symptoms such as nausea and vomiting and you could have the stomach flu, food poisoning, gallstones, kidney stones or any number of other conditions.

Here are some ways to tell what the source of your pain is and when you should seek medical care.

How Is Intestinal Gas Diagnosed

Your healthcare provider may ask you to keep a food diary for a week or more to see if certain foods or drinks make you gassy. Because excessive gas can be a sign of a health problem, you may need one or more of these tests:

  • Blood tests: These tests detect certain conditions like celiac disease that cause gas.
  • Breath test: A hydrogen breath test identifies lactose intolerance or abnormal bacterial growth in the intestine.
  • Colon screening: A flexible sigmoidoscopy lets your provider view the lower part of your colon and rectum . With a colonoscopy, the provider views all of the large intestine. These tests help identify digestive disorders like Crohns disease as well as colon cancer.
  • Food elimination: Your healthcare provider may suggest removing certain foods to see if gas symptoms improve. For example, if youre less gassy after cutting out dairy, you might be lactose intolerant unable to break down lactose, a sugar in milk.
  • Gastrointestinal tract exam: If you belch a lot, your provider may perform a gastrointestinal exam called an upper GI test or barium swallow. You swallow a solution that coats the esophagus, stomach and part of the small intestine with barium for easier viewing on X-rays.

The Link Between Gluten And Back Pain

For most people, back pain does not evoke any thought of gluten intolerance. Clearly, most back pain is not attributable to gluten there are far more common reasons to experience it.* But the connection between back pain and gluten is worthy of discussion. Research has now emerged to show a link between gluten and some forms of back pain.

Many of my patients have celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Often, they recount back pain so severe it required MRIs, medication, and therapy. Some had mysterious pain that no one could explain. In many cases, the back pain resolved with a gluten-free diet. I often wonder how many of them made trips to their practitioner for back pain and were given various treatments that did not address the root cause.

The doctor will diagnose the shingles rash based on its distinctive appearance and distribution on the lower abdomen and stomach.

A blistering and painful rash that is centralized to one area is highly indicative of shingles. But, diagnosing herpes zoster before the rash appears is difficult.

In the event of an unclear diagnosis, lab tests are used to verify the diagnosis.

Also, skin lesion samples can be used to detect the varicella-zoster virus.

Why Does My Stomach Hurt

Tummy troubles are a common cause for a visit to the doctors office. When patients complain of stomach pain, they are sometimes describing pain that is throughout the abdomen area and may not actually be directly related to the organ known as the stomach.

Doctors first try to determine if a patients abdominal pain is caused by a structural or functional problem.

Sometimes the digestive tract does not function properly due to an abnormality with the structure of an organ. Medical imaging will show that the organ does not look normal and is not working properly.

The gastrointestinal system has its own nervous system to control the muscle contractions that digest the food you eat. Functional problems, also called motility disorders, result from poor nerve and muscle function in the digestive tract. Gastrointestinal organs with motility problems will usually look normal on medical imaging tests, such as CT scans or MRI scans, but the organs do not work like they should. Because functional disorders are hard to see in imaging, they can be challenging to diagnose.

What Is Gluten Sensitivity

What could cause lower abdominal pain in a Women? | Apollo Hospitals

Back to non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Since research into this condition is relatively new, not all physicians have accepted it as a real condition. Consequently, not all will give you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity.

Those practitioners who will diagnose the condition will conduct celiac disease testing to rule out celiac first.

Still, recent medical research on gluten sensitivity has strengthened the theory that its a separate condition from celiac disease. Celiac is caused by your bodys reaction to the gluten protein found in wheat, barley, and rye.

Its less clear what exactly causes gluten sensitivity. Because it may be a non-gluten component of wheat and the other gluten grains, non-celiac wheat sensitivity may be a better name for it. For now, though, most medical researchers refer to the condition as non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

To get a better picture of the most common symptoms found in gluten sensitivity, Verywell Health spoke with three physician researchers who have spent a great deal of time studying the condition:

  • Dr. Alessio Fasano
  • Dr. Kenneth Fine
  • Dr. Rodney Ford

They discussed their own clinical experience involving patients with gluten sensitivity. It should be noted that in some cases, their opinions havent been confirmed in published research or accepted by the medical community at large.

Diverticulitis Or Diverticular Inflection:

Diverticula are small pockets that can form in the inside lining of the intestines. Theyre common in middle-aged and older people, but typically arent symptomatic unless they become inflamed or infected .

Mild cases can cause cramping in the lower stomach, often occurring on the left side of the abdomen. More advanced cases can cause severe pain, fever, tenderness, nausea/vomiting and changes in bowel movements.

Got Ulcers Get Tested

A person with genital ulcers should see his or her doctor. Its important to confirm whether or not it is herpes and if so, what type. Genital herpes outbreaks are treated with antiviral medications. These medications can help to reduce the number of days of discomfort and have few side effects. They are most effective when taken early in an outbreak. Some people take these drugs daily to prevent outbreaks.

Once someone has had a test that confirms either type of genital herpes, future partners can have a blood test which tells them if they already have been exposed to the same strain of virus. If the person tests negative, the partner with the infection would be advised to take antiviral therapy daily, in order to help prevent infecting his or her partner. Although daily antiviral therapy decreases the chances of spreading the virus, there is no guarantee, so its best to have a frank conversation with a new sexual partner.
