Omeprazole Causes Abdominal Pain As A Side Effect
Abdominal pain is a documented side effect of omeprazole. You have a 5% risk of abdominal pain if you take omeprazole.
The exact mechanism is still not fully understood. The side effects of omeprazole dont appear to be related to a specific age, dose, or duration of treatment .
Your doctor prescribes omeprazole for conditions such as gastritis, GERD , or peptic ulcer disease.
Often, these conditions cause abdominal pain .
During omeprazole treatment, it is not true that every abdominal pain is omeprazole-induced.
For the pain to be omeprazole-induced stomach pain, it has to:
- Start after taking your omeprazole, or
- Be different in character , or
- Be different in site . A change in the location of pain after omeprazole intake may indicate omeprazole-induced stomach pain.
- Change its intensity after omeprazole .
Your pain has to match one of the above criteria before assuming it is due to omeprazole.

What Else Can I Do To Minimize My Risk Of Getting Stomach Cancer
Stomach cancer, as indicated by WebMD, is third in line for top global killer diseases. While a relationship between PPIs has been established, a direct connection has not been. There is a lack of clarity about the significance of the common H. Pylori infection. While many whose bacterial infections in the study were cleared up with antibiotics and who were maintained for two years afterward on PPIs still got stomach cancer, many did not.
This information should point the patient in the direction of making sure they speak with their physician about H. pylori screening and treatment if they experience frequent heartburn.
Other lifestyle changes to manage heartburn recommended by New York University Langone Health include eating six small meals rather than three larger meals throughout the day, keep your head elevated while you sleep by using an additional pillow or two, and avoid indulging in trigger foods as part of your diet.
Trigger foods are those that are high in caffeine, acids, oils, and spice. Examples include coffeeparticularly on an empty stomach, tomato-based products like spaghetti and pizza, fast deep-fried foods like hamburgers and French fries, and ethnic foods where hot condiments are used like Indian or Mexican dishes.

Acid Reflux Drug Linked To More Than Doubled Risk Of Stomach Cancer Study
There are more than 50m prescriptions for proton pump inhibitors in the UK, though they have previously been linked to side-effects and increased risk of death
A drug commonly used to treat acid reflux is linked to a more than doubled risk of developing stomach cancer, researchers have claimed.
Proton pump inhibitors reduce the amount of acid made by the stomach and are used to treat acid reflux and stomach ulcers.
A study published in the journal Gut identified an association between long-term use of the drug and a 2.4 times higher risk of developing stomach cancer. In the UK, there are more than 50m prescriptions for PPIs every year but they have been linked to side-effects and an increased risk of death.
A link between PPIs and a higher stomach cancer risk has previously been identified by academics but never in a study that first eliminates a type of bacteria suspected of fuelling the illnesss development.
Research by the University of Hong Kong and University College London found that after the Helicobacter pylori was removed, the risk of developing the disease still rose in line with the dose and duration of PPI treatment.
They compared the use of PPI against another drug which limits acid production known as H2 blockers in 63,397 adults. The participants selected had been treated with triple therapy, which combines PPI and antibiotics to kill off the H pylori bacteria over a week, between 2003 and 2012.

Omeprazole Interactions That Increase Side Effects
Omeprazole raises the toxicity and risk of side effects of some prescription drugs by either increasing their absorption or slowing down the bodys metabolism of the drug. These drugs include:
- Theimmune-suppressing drugs methotrexate and tacrolimus
- ADHD medications
- Some anticonvulsants such as phenytoin and fosphenytoin
- The HIV medicationsaquinavir
- The heart medication digoxin
These drugs can generally be taken with omeprazole, but a healthcare professional may need to monitor therapy and reduce doses if necessary.
Some drugs increase the risk of omeprazole side effects if the two are taken together. These include:
- Some cystic fibrosis drugs
Fto Could Restore The Autophagy Inhibition Induced By Omeprazole Pretreatment And Reduce The Sensitivity Of Gc Cells To Antineoplastic Drugs
FTO could restore the autophagy inhibition induced by omeprazole pretreatment and reduce the sensitivity of GC cells to antineoplastic drugs
MTT assay was performed to evaluate the relative survival rate of FTO gain-of-function cell models treated with three kinds of different antitumor drugs with or without omeprazole preconditioning. **P< 0.01 versus cells in indicated groups . Western blot assay was used to estimate the protein expression levels of autophagy-related and apoptosis markers in FTO gain-of-function cell models treated with antitumor drugs. Then cell apoptosis was detected using flow cytometry with annexin V FITC/ PI double staining in FTO gain-of-function cell models treated with three kinds of different antitumor drugs with omeprazole preconditioning. Meanwhile, the relative apoptosis was statistically analyzed, **P< 0.01 versus NC cells of corresponding group. FTO enhancement resulted in LC3 puncta further accumulation in AGS and HGC-27 cells treated with antitumor drugs. The representative images of LC3 puncta in GC cells were shown, the magnification was 400× and the number of puncta per cell was counted, **P< 0.01 versus NC cells in corresponding groups. MTT assay was performed to evaluate the relative survival rate of FTO gain-of-function cell models treated with 3-MA along with omeprazole preconditioning **P< 0.01 versus Lv-NC cells.

How Long Do Omeprazole Side Effects Last
The body clears omeprazole in a few hours, so many side effects will fade in that time. Because the effects of omeprazole on the stomach lining, however, typically last for three or more days, some gastrointestinal side effects may linger for a few days after discontinuing omeprazole. Side effects caused by combining omeprazole with antibiotics, such as taste perversions or tongue discoloration, will resolve a few days after the antibiotics are discontinued. Serious side effects associated with omeprazole, however, like bone loss, low white blood cell counts, liver disease, or kidney problems, may take longer to resolve. Report side effects to your healthcare provider.

Diet & Lifestyle Advise
- Avoid intake of acid or heartburn triggering foods or drinks like onions, peppermint, chocolate, caffeinated beverages, citrus fruits or juices, tomatoes and high-fat and spicy foods.
- Before going to sleep try to raise your bedhead so that your head and chest are higher than your feet. Do not use piles of pillows, instead, one raised block is fine. This will not allow the stomach acid to backflow through your food pipe.
- Avoid taking alcohol and smoking cigarette. Alcohol can raise the level of production of stomach acid leading to heartburn and acid reflux. On the other hand, nicotine smoking damages the valve which prevents backflow of the stomach acid back into the food pipe.
- Include high fibre containing foods, berries, cherries, leafy green veggies and black peppers in your meal. These foods are full of antioxidant, calcium and vitamin B 12 that can help cope with the long term effects of the medicine. Fermented dairy products like miso, sauerkraut, and kimchi contain probiotics which help in the prevention of excess stomach acid production. Cranberry juice can be beneficial in the peptic ulcer and H Pyroli infection.
- Avoid regular sitting continuously, as it can increase stomach acid production. Try to take a break of 5 minutes in 1 hour by brisk walking or stretching.
Should I Stop Using Prilosec
PPIs like lansoprazole and omeprazole are available over the counter without a prescription. But long term use can be problematic.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says over-the-counter PPIs should only be taken for the 14-day course up to three times a year.
In some cases, medications called an H2 blocker like Pepcid or Tagamet may be appropriate. After a week of taking an H2 blocker instead of PPIs, the PPIs will be out of the system. It is then possible to switch to OTC antacids on an as-needed basis.
However, some people may still experience difficult symptoms after coming off PPIs and may need to go back on them at a higher dosage.
Before making any changes to medications or dosages, patients who are on PPIs should discuss with their healthcare provider whether they should continue taking the medication, or whether other options might be appropriate.

Are There Other Drugs I Can Take
As indicated by Healthline, an alternate class of over-the-counter medications used to treat acid reflux symptoms are known as H2 blockers. Common brand names in this category are:
- Tagamet, Tagamet HB
These drugs are also available by prescription and are used to treat frequent heartburn but also as treatment and prophylaxis for peptic ulcers and inflammation of the stomach. While the long-term use of omeprazole products may set a patient up with just one condition ripe for the development of stomach cancer, H2 blockers appear to be safer to use by far.

Clinical Studies On The Association Between Proton
The incidence of gastric cancer indeed has been gradually declining in the past 50years with an average estimated annual percentage decrease of 2.5% per year. This observation has therefore been used as an argument against the potential carcinogenic role of PPIs, which has been available only since 1989. However, it could not be over-emphasized that reduction in the prevalence of H. pylori and improvement in food processing actually contribute to this observed decline in gastric cancer incidence, hence masking the possible effect of PPIs on increasing gastric cancer incidence.
As gastric cancer is a relatively rare disease which requires a long-time lag to develop, randomized clinical trials demonstrating the potential carcinogenic effects of PPIs are both resource and labor intensive. More importantly, there may be an ethical issue in randomizing patients to receive intervention to observe primary adverse outcome. As such, the determination of the causal relationship could, at best, be determined by well-designed observational studies controlling for known confounding factors, with minimization of biases.
Take Omeprazole As Directed
Take the daily dose as prescribed at the time prescribed. Over-the-counter omeprazole should be taken in the morning before breakfast. For prescription omeprazole, the prescribing doctor or other healthcare professional will specify a time of day to take the medication. Dont increase or decrease the dose. Dont skip a dose for one or two days or take a double dose in place of a missed dose. The medicine must be taken daily over the full period to realize its full benefits.
