Correlation Between Gut Health And Hormones:

There is a lot of science behind the gut-brain axis as well as how hormones and gut health interact. It makes senseif yout gut is in disarray, your entire body and immunity are effected. If your hormones are out of balance, your digestion is off, which can then create imbalances in your gut microbiome.

Ill allow the professionals who are articulate in such matters to be your educators, but I will point out one tidbit I learned that I found fascinating. It turns out that blastocystis hominis, which is the parasite I had, can be responsible for hashimotos hypothyroidism. Hashimotos is the autoimmune form of hypothyroidism, wherein your body attacks your thyroid, causing it to malfunction. You can read more about this in Izabella Wentz book, Hashimotos Protocol.

Strategy #: Coat And Heal

How Can I Repair My Stomach Lining

There are strategies to help soothe an irritated gut lining. Many botanicals or herbal extracts have mucus-like properties that help to coat the irritated mucosa.Aloe is one of the best-known home remedies for an irritated gut.

Aloe is recognizably very mucus-like & for its “cooling” effect. It physically coats damaged areas of the lining, prevents future irritation – allowing healing to begin. Coating the gut lining also blocks the ability of pathogens to adhere to exposed areas – helping to reduce or manage infections.Aloe extracts also contain a wealth of plant chemicals that have antioxidant & balancing qualities. Use the oral gels short-term as they may create dependence on it as a laxative. For this reason, I generally stick to “aloe leaf extract” found in powders and capsules.Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice , Marshmallow root, Slippery Elm, Mastic gum, Mullein, Okra, and Comfrey also have mucus-like properties that aid in a coating & calming effect on the gut lining.Products like Glutagenics by Metagenics and Mastic Gum /DGL by Klaire Labs combine a variety of these herbal extracts. MegaGuard by Microbiome Labs supports normal H. pylori levels, promotes mucosal health, and motility.

Quell Mucosal Inflammation

Another strategy to promote healing is to reduce excess inflammation.

No Dodgy Kebabs On The Microbiome Diet Menu

Greasy, processed food goes hand-in-hand with a boozy night out. Put them together and you have a recipe for digestive mayhem.

Weve all been there and eaten something which just didnt agree with our gut. Bacteria is a common cause of food poisoning with symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, and incapacitating stomach cramps. In severe cases, it can be deadly. Thats why proper food handling and hygiene in restaurants is critical.

So its worth considering the possibility that your dodgy Saturday night takeaway may be a culprit in temporary digestive discomfort. When pathogens invade, they rapidly multiply and produce toxins. In turn, the gut lining reacts with inflammation. So if you are heading out to paint the town red, line your stomach before you go out and dont eat that dodgy takeaway.

1. PROBIOTICS WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE

First of all, it’s important to know that there is a balance between good and bad bacteria in our digestive system, which is responsible for the way our bowel functions. Probiotics are live microorganisms that reside in the gut that play an integral role in maintaining healthy gut function by preventing the invasion of harmful microbes. They can also assist with

  • the elimination of toxins,
  • our ability to fight off infection and illness
  • regulating our metabolism
  • nutrient synthesis and absorption.

Probiotics can be found in our Everyday Greens as well as fermented foods such as tempeh, miso, kefir, sauerkraut and yoghurt, as well as in powdered or capsule form from health food stores.

Identify The Foods You Should Eat:

As mentioned, foods that are low in fiber can lead to this condition. This offers you the opportunity to fix a leaky gut naturally. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that you consume a lot of food high in fiber to heal the leaky gut. It is also advisable to eat many fruits and vegetables to boost or support your immune system. Foods that are rich in probiotics and prebiotics are also essential. But if you do not have access to such foods, you can replace them with probiotic supplements. You should also include a lot of fish, meat, eggs, and yogurt in your diet and eat a lot of healthy fats as well. This is because a form of short-chain fatty acid called n-butyrate plays an important role in feeding the cells that line the gut. This way, it helps to provide the weak cells in the gut linings with the necessary nutrients and helps them heal faster. Also, when you consume a lot of soluble fibers, fruits, and vegetables, you will help support the gut bacteria responsible for producing n-butyrate. Other sources of healthy fat include clarified butter and coconut oil- which contains medium-chain fatty acids essential for keeping a healthy gut.

The long list of conditions associated with leaky gut syndrome include acne, allergies, arthritis, asthma, autism, and many more.

Alessio Fasano, MD, director of the Center for Celiac Research & Treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children in Boston, recently discovered that leaky guts can even lead to autoimmune disorders.

And its a bit of a vicious cycle: Our bodies can only fight so many fires at one time, explains Liz Lipski, PhD, CCN, author of Digestive Wellness. If someone is suffering from chronic stress, disease, or inflammation, the normal repair and maintenance of the gut gets deferred.

What damages the gut? Lipski and other experts say the top culprits include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, as well as sugar, alcohol, processed foods, and any foods that trigger an allergic response. Other irritants include chronic stress, toxins, and microbiome imbalances.

    Anatomy Of A Leaky Gut

Most of the problems associated with leaky gut syndrome occur in your small intestine, but all the organs of your digestion are involved and impacted. The information here is compiled from Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, coauthor of Real Cause, Real Cure, and Liz Lipski, PhD, CCN, author of Digestive Wellness.

Mouth: Not chewing food thoroughly can be a setup for digestive troubles. Mechanically breaking your food down to a liquid state makes your stomachs job easier. It also mixes in digestive enzymes that begin dissolving proteins, carbs, and fats even before you swallow.

Stomach: Your stomach digests food with enzymes and acids, distilling it into a slurry that moves into the small intestine. If digestion is incomplete, food particles enter the small intestine. And if the gut lining there is irritated, those particles can pass into the bloodstream, setting the stage for inflammation and food sensitivities. Incomplete digestion can negatively affect your assimilation of nutrients and encourage the overgrowth of bad bacteria and yeasts.

Large Intestine: As your large intestine continues to break down food, the colon extracts water from the slurry for use elsewhere in the body. A solid stool of waste forms and is sent to the rectum. In the absence of adequate fiber, however, elements of slow-moving waste can reenter the system, creating a variety of inflammatory and toxicity problems throughout the body.
