Prognosis or outlook is defined as the chance of recovering from cancer. In general, prognosis depends mainly on the type and location of the cancer, stage of the cancer, overall health, treatment decisions, etc. Defining survival rate is a mere prediction to understand the prevalence of cancer all over the world. Stomach cancer survival rate can be predicted depending upon the stage.
Stage Iiia Iiib And Iiic
Stage IIIA tumors have four possible conditions.
They may have:
- Spread to the muscle wall and seven to 15 nearby lymph nodes, or
- Spread to the subserosa and three to six lymph nodes, or
- Spread to the serosa and one to six nearby lymph nodes, or
- Spread to nearby organs including liver, colon, spleen, pancreas abdominal wall, adrenal glands, small intestine, back of the abdomen or kidney.
Stage IIIB tumors have three possible conditions.
They may have:
- Spread to the submucosa or muscle layer and to 16 or more nearby lymph nodes, or
- Spread to the subserosa or serosa and seven to 15 lymph nodes, or
- Spread out of the stomach to nearby organs and to one to six nearby lymph nodes.
Stage IIIC tumors have two possible conditions.
They may have:
- Spread to the subserosa or serosa and 16 or more nearby lymph nodes, or
- Spread from the stomach to nearby organs and seven or more nearby lymph nodes.
Survival Rates Are Based On Research
Survival rates are based on studies with a large number of patients, so an averaged survival rate cannot predict any one person’s prognosis.
A five-year-survival rate of 70% may sound dismal, but the truth is that you very well may live a whole lot longer than five years. Some people are even cured of their stomach cancer. This is most likely to occur when the cancer is found at an early stage. Unfortunately, stomach cancer is often not found until it’s more advanced.
Survival numbers also vary according to cancer stage. For example, a large retrospective multicenter Italian study of patients with early gastric cancer published in 2006 reported long-term survival after surgical resection of 92%, 82%, 73%, and 27%, respectively, for patients with 0, 1 to 3, 4 to 6, and > 6 positive nodes. In recent years, the survival of gastric cancer has improved mainly for stage I-III.
The five-year survival rate for stomach cancer is simply a statisticit’s meant to guide you and your healthcare provider so you have an idea of what to expect, but it’s not supposed to be taken as a hard-and-fast rule.

Where Do These Numbers Come From
The American Cancer Society relies on information from the SEER* database, maintained by the National Cancer Institute , to provide survival statistics for different types of cancer.
The SEER database tracks 5-year relative survival rates for stomach cancer in the United States, based on how far the cancer has spread. The SEER database, however, does not group cancers by AJCC TNM stages . Instead, it groups cancers into localized, regional, and distant stages:
- Localized: There is no sign that the cancer has spread outside of the stomach.
- Regional: The cancer has spread outside the stomach to nearby structures or lymph nodes.
- Distant: The cancer has spread to distant parts of the body, such as the liver.
What Is The Mortality Rate Of Gastric Cancer In The Us
In the United States, gastric cancer represents 1.5% of all new cancer cases but 1.8% of cancer deaths. The overall 5-year relative survival rate, which was 14.3% in 1975, rose to 32.0% by 2010-2016. During that period, the 5-year relative survival rate by stage at diagnosis was 69.5% for localized disease, 32.0% for regional disease, and 5.5% for distant disease. Worldwide, gastric cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death, with the highest rates reported in East Asia, South America and Eastern Europe.

What Is A 5
A relative survival rate compares people with the same type and stage of cancer to people in the overall population. For example, if the 5-year relative survival rate for a specific stage of stomach cancer is 70%, it means that people who have that cancer are, on average, about 70% as likely as people who dont have that cancer to live for at least 5 years after being diagnosed.
Has Anyone Survived Stage 4 Stomach Cancer

I just learned that my brother in China was diagnosed stage 4 stomach cancer last week. The surgery could not go on at his stage. However, the cancer seems not spread to lung, liver, but spread over his bowl. It is devastating after hearing this. I read a lot of research papers and articles about it. I now know it is incurable, but I see about 3% survivors from statistics. If any of you belong to those 3%, or know anyone in those 3%. Would you please let me know what you have done? As eating, sleeping, exercising, or any unconventional approach you or he/she have taken? I am trying to find something common in those survivors. My reading told me that any conventional approach normally go to a dead end. I am struggling whether I should suggest family to let my brother take a paliative approach, combined with some Chinese herbal, instead of continually using chemo. My brother said he is not afaid of death, but does like die in hospital with endless pain. I hope he can fight for his life, but I do not want him to suffer the pain on a route without hope. Please help me. |

Better Prognosis For Resectable Tumors
Patients whose tumors are found before they have metastasized or become locally advanced tend to have longer survival rates, on average, because their tumors can usually be resected .
About 15 to 20 percent of all pancreatic tumors are resectable. These include stage I and stage II tumors. Rarely, locally advanced stage III tumors, which are typically considered unresectable , are characterized as borderline and may be removed if the patient has access to an experienced, highly trained surgeon.
Tumors can still grow back in many patients. So, on average, patients whose tumors were resected live for 2.5 years after their diagnosis and have a five-year survival rate of 20 to 30 percent.

I am stage 4, stomach cancer, have survived for 2 years, 50 years old, and male.
To your question: I eat 5 to 10 servings of vegetables and fruits. A breast cancer study showed that having > 5 servings of vegetables and fruits a day cut down cancer recurrence rate by 50%. I do not eat red meat. I do not eat salty, spicy, or oily foods. A rule of thumb is to eat fresh foods. Some traditional Chinese foods are bad in that regard due to special treatments for preservation. I exercise every day, starting from 10 min. a day last year to now 35 min a day. I sleep 8 hours a day. I appreciate life and am enjoying my life.
I went thru chemo and radiation therapies. The success rates of those treatments are low, about 30% per my oncology doctor, but unfortunately are the best one can find today. Never give up those conventional treatments. In fact the best defense against cancer is our body’s immunity system. And the best way to build up one’s immunity system is to do what I said above. Unconventional approaches can be supplemental. Miracles do happen. I have seen at least one success case. Just do not bet on it.
My life was not always like what I said above. I used to smoke, slept 4 to 5 hours a day, never ate breakfast, skipped lunch more often than not, had high pressure from work, and thus ill tempered. Looking back, I admit I deserved the cancer.
Encourage your brother. Never give up. Never!

Prognosis Depends On Stage At Diagnosis
Long-term prognosis for pancreatic cancer depends on the size and type of the tumor, lymph node involvement and degree of metastasis at the time of diagnosis. The earlier pancreatic cancer is diagnosed and treated, the better the prognosis.
Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer usually shows little or no symptoms until it has advanced and spread. Therefore, most cases are diagnosed at later, more difficult-to-treat stages.

For some people with stomach cancer , treatment can remove or destroy the cancer. The end of treatment can be both stressful and exciting. You may be relieved to finish treatment, but its hard not to worry about cancer coming back. This is very common if youve had cancer.
For other people, the cancer might never go away completely. Some people may get chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or other treatments to try to keep the cancer in check for as long as possible and to prevent or limit any problems it might cause. Learning to live with cancer that does not go away can be difficult and very stressful.

In the United States, 9 out of 10 kids diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia will live. In Jordan, the survival rate is 16 percent.
And while cervical cancer patients have a five-year survival rate of over 70 percent in countries like Mauritius and Norway, the rate in Libya is under 40 percent.
That’s the sobering news from the largest cancer study ever published. It surveyed more than 25.7 million patients and reveals a huge gulf in cancer survival worldwide.
But there’s good news as well. “In most countries, survival from some of the commonest cancers has been improving,” says Dr. Michel Coleman from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, one of the study’s authors.
More people are surviving breast cancer, colon cancer and stomach cancer than ever before, especially in the U.S. and Europe. The survival rate for breast cancer in France and Finland, for example, is 87 percent. The data from other regions are also encouraging. Brazil’s breast cancer survival rate has gone up from 78 percent in 1995-99 to 87 percent in 2005-09.
Causes And Risk Factors
Abnormal cell growth in the stomach lining causes stomach cancer to grow. But each person has different risk factors that increase individual risk for developing the disease.
The most significant risk factor for developing stomach cancer is having a Helicobacter pylori bacterial infection, according to Moffitt Cancer Center. Long-term infections can cause pre-cancerous changes in the stomach lining.
Some factors, such as age and sex, cant be controlled. Others, such as lifestyle and diet, can be controlled.
Having a risk factor does not mean that you will get cancer not having risk factors doesn’t mean that you will not get cancer. Talk with your doctor if you think you may be at risk.

Could I Get A Second Cancer After Treatment
People whove had stomach cancer can still get other cancers. They do not get second cancers at an increased rate overall, but they do seem to have an increased risk of cancers of the thyroid and small intestine.
Experts do not recommend any additional testing to look for second cancers in people whove had stomach cancer. Still, its important to let your doctor know about any new symptoms or problems you have, because they could be caused by the stomach cancer coming back, or by a new disease or second cancer.
Like other people, survivors of stomach cancer should follow the American Cancer Society guidelines for the early detection of cancer and stay away from tobacco products, which increase the risk of many types of cancers.
To help maintain good health, survivors should also:
- Get to and stay at a healthy weight.
- Stay physically active and limit time spent sitting or lying down.
- Follow a healthy eating pattern that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and that limits or avoids red and processed meats, sugary drinks, and highly processed foods.
- Avoid or limit alcohol. If you do drink, have no more than 1 drink per day for women or 2 per day for men.
These steps may also lower the risk of some other health problems.

A 60% 5-year survival rate therefore indicates that it is estimated that 60 out of every 100 patients will live for 5 years after diagnosis while the rest will probably die. This is just an estimate and not an exact number, since many factors influence the progress of one’s disease.
