Exposure and response prevention can also treat emetophobia. It is a therapy technique specifically designed to manage obsessive-compulsive disorder. It works to gradually expose someone to their triggers without engaging in their obsessive-compulsive behaviors. Through this exposure, a person can see the risk of vomiting is lower than they believe, and less dangerous and upsetting than they thought.

ERP is a challenging type of therapy. People should feel well enough to start the sessions, as the treatment can increase anxiety once it begins.

The process of ERP involves three stages:

Physiological symptoms

A person will generate the physical symptoms of nausea and vomiting in a controlled way, with the support of their therapist. This is called interoceptive cue exposure or symptom cue exposure. Exercises can include spinning or other methods of inducing nausea, and doctors will continually monitor the persons anxiety levels.

Environmental triggers

A person will visit places they avoid and associate with a risk of vomiting, such as bars, restaurants, or public bathrooms. They will also eat foods that they normally avoid, to gradually build up their tolerance and decrease their anxiety.

Exposure

Once someone is comfortable with the physiological symptoms and environmental triggers that cause anxiety, a doctor will ask them to simulate vomiting. This exercise aims to decrease the fear of being sick.

Tips For Easing Nausea At Home

  • Eat small meals every couple of hours, and be sure to eat and drink slowly. An empty stomach can make nausea worse.
  • Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking enough fluids. This can include water, decaffeinated herbal and iced teas, seltzer, clear juices, or coconut water.
  • Avoid caffeinated foods and drinks.
  • Drink beverages with ginger or chamomile, which may help settle your stomach.
  • Eat cool or cold foods that dont have much odor, such as chilled fruit, frozen popsicles, applesauce, or yogurt.
  • Eat bland food, such as saltine crackers, rice, toast, potatoes, plain noodles, or broths.
  • Avoid spicy, fatty, and fried foods that can upset your stomach.
  • Avoid activity right after eating.

When To Contact A Clinician

Persistent or severe abdominal pain, especially if unrelieved by vomiting or passing a bowel movement

Fever greater than 101 degrees F, not relieved by acetaminophen, or any fever that lasts more than three days

Vomiting or diarrhea without any improvement for more 24 hours

Blood in vomit or stools

No urination for more than 8 hours, or painful urination

Does Ginger Really Work To Help Relieve Nausea

It may seem like a myth just waiting to be busted, but if your mom ever gave you ginger ale for an upset tummy, she wasnt wrong to try it. You see, though ginger ale typically doesnt contain enough ginger to effectively settle an upset stomach, ginger itself is often advocated as a helpful treatment for nausea. And according to recent studies, it works.14

How to Make Ginger Tea

  • Simply peel the rhizome and slice off a few slivers of ginger .
  • Let them rest in hot water for about 20-25 minutes.
  • Now, ginger does have a bit of bite, but youll likely acquire a taste for it quickly if you dont already love it.

And if tea isnt your thing, you can actually just shave off a piece of raw ginger and chew on it for a bit. Of course, you dont want to eat the whole thing, but just chew on it, and let the juices calm your symptoms.

What Is Nausea And Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are not diseases, but rather are symptoms of many different conditions, such as infection , food poisoning, motion sickness, overeating, blocked intestine, illness, concussion or brain injury, appendicitis and migraines. Nausea and vomiting can sometimes be symptoms of more serious diseases such as heart attacks, kidney or liver disorders, central nervous system disorders, brain tumors, and some forms of cancer.

Nausea: The Dynamic Threshold

And in order to understand the physiology of nausea, and how stress might bring it about, its important to look at the idea of the dynamic threshold. Turns out, every person has a threshold for nausea that changes minute by minute.

So, at any given moment, your personal threshold for nausea can change depending on the interaction of any number of inherent factors with more fluctuating psychological states of stress, anticipation, and expectation.5

For example, for some people who feel nauseous, every meal is a torment that causes stress and frustration. In these cases, the stomach will revolt against the idea of food by causing nausea or even a loss of appetite. This can leave you feeling weak, and you may even be dealing with weight loss.6

As you can see, even though stress is an emotion, it is capable of causing a chain reaction in your body.

What Causes Anxiety Related Upset Stomach

Scientists have many different theories about why anxiety causes an upset stomach. One of the key beliefs is that anxiety causes changes in neurotransmitter function, particularly serotonin. There are serotonin receptors in the gut, and so when your body is experiencing anxiety, its likely receiving chemicals that tell it to respond with that upset feeling.

Other causes include:

  • Adrenaline Body Changes Adrenaline works with cortisol, the stress hormone, to allow the body to respond to danger quickly. These hormones may change the general physiological traits of the gut. Further, the ratio of good versus bad bacteria in the GI system may be altered by these hormones.
  • Slowed Digestion Anxiety activates the fight or flight system. Studies have shown that the speed of digestion decreases as a result of the fight or flight system, and this may cause discomfort in the stomach and intestines as a result.
  • Stomach Tension Anxiety also puts a great deal of pressure on the stomach muscles, and these, in turn, put pressure on the stomach. Any stomach pressure has the potential to change the way that your stomach feels during periods of stress.

All of these are potential issues that lead to problems with your stomach during periods of stress.

Causes Of Recurrent Stomach Pains

  • Stress or Worries. The most common cause of frequent stomach pains is stress. Over 10% of children have a worried stomach. These children tend to be sensitive and too serious. They often are model children. This can make them more at risk to the normal stresses of life. Examples of these events are changing schools, moving or family fights. The pain is in the pit of the stomach or near the belly button. The pain is real.
  • Abdominal Migraine. Attacks of stomach pain and vomiting with sudden onset and offset. Often occur in children who later develop migraine headaches. Strongly genetic.
  • Functional Abdominal Pains. Functional means the stomach pains are due to a sensitive GI tract. The GI tract is free of any disease.
  • School Avoidance. Stomach pains that mainly occur in the morning on school days. They keep the child from going to school.

In population studies, more than 50 percent of adults reported at least one episode of nausea within the preceding 12 months, with women reporting more episodes than men. How Do I Prevent Vomiting Once I Feel Nauseated

When you begin to feel nauseated, you may be able to prevent vomiting by:

  • Drinking small amounts of clear, sweetened liquids such as soda or fruit juices
  • Resting either in a sitting position or in a propped lying position activity may worsen nausea and may lead to vomiting.

To prevent nausea and vomiting in children:

  • To treat motion sickness in a car, seat your child so they face the front windshield . Also, reading or playing video games in the car could cause motion sickness.
