Does Stomach Cancer Cause Back Pain

Severe And Persistent Indigestion And Heartburn

Cause for intermittent pain on left side of stomach & back region – Dr. Sanjay Panicker

Severe and persistent indigestion and heartburn can indicate that an individual has stomach cancer. Many patients affected by certain forms of stomach cancer describe feeling a burning sensation when they swallow food. This feeling becomes concerning and indicative of stomach cancer when it continues for three weeks or longer. Heartburn occurs when acid flows backward into the esophagus and causes pain. It triggers this pain because the esophageal lining does not have the same protective mucus layer.

Cancerous stomach tumors can secrete substances that cause the stomach to produce too much acid. The excess acid and inflammation from the tumor can cause gastric acid to travel back up into the esophagus. A large tumor can take up too much space in an individual’s stomach and cause its contents to flow backward into the esophagus. This can trigger heartburn and indigestion. Furthermore, individuals who have chronic heartburn or indigestion initially are more likely to develop stomach cancer than others.

Pain In The Stomach Area Or Back

Almost 7 out of 10 people with pancreatic cancer go to their doctors because they have pain. Pain is more common in cancers of the body and tail of the pancreas. People describe it as a dull pain that feels as if it is boring into you. It can begin in the stomach area and spread around to the back. The pain is worse when you lie down and is better if you sit forward. It can be worse after meals.

Some people may only have back pain. This is often felt in the middle of the back, and is persistent.

Why Does My Stomach Hurt

Tummy troubles are a common cause for a visit to the doctors office. Whenpatients complain of stomach pain, they are sometimes describing painthat is throughout the abdomen area and may not actually be directlyrelated to the organ known as the stomach.

Doctors first try to determine if a patients abdominal pain is caused by astructural or functional problem.

Sometimes the digestive tract does not function properly due to anabnormality with the structure of an organ. Medical imaging will show thatthe organ does not look normal and is not working properly.

Functional problems, also called motility disorders, are conditions thatresult from poor nerve and muscle function in the digestive tract. Organsthat are part of the gastrointestinal tract will usually look normal onmedical images, such asCT scansorMRI scans, but the organs do not work like they should.

The gastrointestinal system has its own nervous system to control themuscle contractions that digest the food you eat, saysDr. Linda Lee. Functional disorders can be difficult to diagnose, because we cannoteasily see problems with the nerves or muscles in the gastrointestinaltract.

When Is Back Pain A Sign Of Something Serious

People may have back pain for various reasons, such as high stress levels, their menstrual cycles, or insufficient physical activity. As such, experiencing mild or occasional back pain should not be a concern.

If strategies for relieving back pain dont help, or if your lower back pain is making it difficult to do everyday tasks, the pain might be a warning sign of something more serious. Specifically, if your pain comes and goes, worsens, or lasts longer than two weeks, it could indicate ovarian cancer, so a visit to your doctors office may be in order.

  • Loss of appetite or difficulty eating
  • Frequent urination or increased urge to urinate
  • Tiredness
  • Changes to your menstrual cycle
  • Pain during sex

It is important to speak with a health care provider if your back pain is frequent, gets worse, or does not improve with over-the-counter pain relievers, or if you have new or unusual symptoms that concern you. If your doctor suspects an ovarian cancer diagnosis, they will likely recommend tests to rule out other conditions or diseases. These tests may include:

  • Blood tests
  • Gastrointestinal tests such as a colonoscopy
  • CT scan, MRI, or ultrasound

How Can You Treat Stomach Cancer

The treatments for stomach cancer vary depending on the type of cancer you have, its location in the body, if it is advanced and your personalized care plan. At The University of Kansas Cancer Center, we offer clinical trials that may provide new treatment options for stomach cancer.

Possible options include:

  • Radiation: High-energy X-rays to destroy cancer cells, typically done using a machine outside the body.
  • Chemotherapy: Using one or more drugs to destroy cancer cells by preventing cancer cell growth.
  • Surgery: GI surgery is typically a minimally invasive procedure. The surgeon removes the tumor, as well as some surrounding healthy tissue to determine the extent of disease.
  • Targeted therapy: Treatment that targets the genes, proteins or tissue that supports the cancerous cell growth and survival. Targeted therapy blocks the growth and spread of cancer cells and minimizes damage to healthy cells.

Serious Warning Signs Of Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer is a malignancy that begins in the cells of an individual’s stomach, which are the cells responsible for producing mucus. Stomach cancer occurs when damage occurs in the DNA of one of the cells that give it the ability to grow faster, multiply quicker, and live longer. Certain infections, obesity, some inherited conditions, and smoking can increase the risk of stomach cancer. Stomach cancer can be diagnosed through a physical exam, blood tests, upper endoscopy, CT scans, barium swallow x-ray, or stomach biopsy.

Stomach cancer treatment may include surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and radiation therapy. A combination of these treatments is necessary to cure stomach cancer. Many patients will also need certain pain medications and other cancer medicines to assist them and make the journey easier.

When To See A Healthcare Provider

Most back pain resolves over a few weeks with conservative treatment. If you have unexplained back pain or pain that persists for longer than six weeks, it is best to seek the advice of a healthcare provider.

If you have back pain along with weakness, difficulty walking, pain when awakening in the morning, or loss of bowel or bladder control you should be examined immediately, as these symptoms can indicate a more serious problem.

If your back pain persists after conservative treatment, let your healthcare provider know. They may refer you to a specialist for further evaluation. Injections to help with the pain can help, or surgery could be necessary. Back pain that is accompanied by signs of cancer should be further evaluated.

Feeling And Being Sick

Stomach cancer can cause a blockage in the stomach. This stops food from passing through your digestive symptom which can make you feel or be sick.

Rarely, there is blood in the vomit. You may not be able to see any blood if it is small amounts. The blood might be bright red, which means it is fresh bleeding. Or it may look dark brown, like used coffee grounds, if the blood has been in the stomach for a while.

How Acid Reflux/gerd May Cause Upper Back Pain

Pancreas Pain Symptoms

Acid reflux back pain is rare.

But to understand acid reflux related back pain we need to understand what causes the pain.

Heartburn is a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease and is caused when stomach acid regularly enters the lower esophagus.

The lower esophagus sphincter is a round shaped muscle located at the bottom the esophagus, just before the entrance to your stomach.

The sphincter acts like a one stop valve. Meaning, it opens one way.

As you swallow the sphincter opens to allow food into the stomach then, closes to stop stomach acid escaping back into the esophagus.

Sometimes, the valve-like muscle is too relaxed or weakens and doesnt close fully. This allows stomach acid to flow back up the esophagus and its corrosive effect causes a burning sensation in the chest and sore throat.

Chronic heartburn can cause severe pain that can radiate to the upper back causing pain and discomfort between the shoulder blades.

Symptoms Of Stomach Cancer

Most patients with early-stage stomach cancer have no symptoms of the disease. In other cases, stomach cancer patients may mistake their symptoms for a common stomach virus. When the signs and symptoms of stomach cancer are not apparent, the disease may reach advanced stages before a diagnosis is made. Thats why it is important that patients considered high risk talk to their doctors about symptoms that may be signs of a stomach tumor.

Symptoms Of Rare Pancreatic Cancers

Islet cell tumors, also called neuroendocrine tumors, arise from the cells in the pancreas that make hormones. Islet cell tumors account for less than 5% of all pancreas tumors.

Like pancreatic adenocarcinoma, islet cell tumors may cause abdominal pain, weight loss, nausea, and vomiting. Hormones released by an islet cell tumor can also cause symptoms: These include

  • Insulinomas : sweating, anxiety, lightheadedness, and fainting from low blood sugar
  • Glucagonomas : diarrhea, excessive thirst or urination, weight loss
  • Gastrinomas : abdominal pain, stomach ulcers that can bleed, reflux, weight loss
  • Somatostatinomas : diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain, foul-smelling fatty stools
  • VIPomas : watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, facial flushing

So Why Would You Go See The Doctor

An important clinical goal for you and your doctor should be to detect risk for prostate cancer long before it can cause symptoms.

Thus, any initial detection of signs that you may have prostate cancer is now most commonly the result of a regular check-up carried out by your primary care physician, which may include a digital rectal examination or a prostate specific antigen test.

The most common symptom which may make a man go to either his primary care physician or a urologist, and which might subsequently lead to a diagnosis of prostate cancer, is some form of problem with normal urination.

Since all the symptoms listed above may be caused by prostate cancer and/or by a number of other disorders , it would be wise to talk to your family doctor if you or someone else in your family is having one or more of these problems on a regular basis.

What Is Pancreatic Cancer

Raise Awareness About Stomach And Pancreatic Cancer This ...

The word cancer means an uncontrolled and unregulated growth of cells. When cancer starts in the pancreas, it is called pancreatic cancer. The pancreas is an organ located in the upper left abdomen, behind the stomach. This organ serves several important functions, particularly regulating digestion and blood sugar levels. The pancreas has four main parts: head, neck, body and tail. Almost 75 percent of all pancreatic cancers occur within the head or neck of the pancreas, 15 to 20 percent occur in the body of the pancreas and 5 to 10 percent occur in the tail. When cancer develops in the pancreas, the rapidly-dividing cancer cells form a mass or tumor that can spread to other sites in the body. The cancerous mass deprives the normal cells of nutrition and space, causing a disturbance in the functioning of the pancreas.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 60,430 people in the US will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2021. Also, pancreatic cancer will cause about 48,220 deaths in the US in 2021.

Causes Of Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer is caused by changes in the cells of the stomach, although it’s unclear exactly why these changes occur.

Cancer begins with a change in the structure of the DNA in cells, which can affect how they grow. This means cells grow and reproduce uncontrollably, producing a lump of tissue called a tumour.

Left untreated, cancer can spread to other parts of the body, usually through the lymphatic system .

Once the cancer reaches your lymphatic system, it’s capable of spreading to other parts of your body, including your blood, bones and organs.

It’s not known what triggers the changes in DNA that lead to stomach cancer and why only a small number of people develop the condition.
