Stage 4 Peritoneal Mesothelioma
There is no official stage 4 for peritoneal mesothelioma. This type of the cancer accounts for roughly 20% of all mesothelioma cases. It is generally accepted that peritoneal patients with extensive tumor spreading are classified as stage 4.
For people who can try surgery, heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy is the most promising option. It combines surgery and heated chemotherapy circulated throughout the abdomen.
What Is Stage 4 Cancer
Stage 4 cancer is sometimes referred to as metastatic cancer, because it often means the cancer has spread from its origin to distant parts of the body. This stage may be diagnosed years after the initial cancer diagnosis and/or after the primary cancer has been treated or removed.
When a cancer metastasizes to a different part of the body, it is still defined by its original location. For instance, if breast cancer metastasizes to the brain, it is still considered breast cancer, not brain cancer. Many stage 4 cancers have subcategories, such as stage 4A or stage 4B, which are often determined by the degree to which the cancer has spread throughout the body.
Liquid cancers, or blood cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma or multiple myeloma, are staged differently than most other cancers because they may not always form solid tumors. Liquid cancers may be staged by a variety of factors, including:
- The ratio of healthy blood cells to cancerous cells
- The degree to which lymph nodes, the liver or spleen may be swollen
- Whether the cancer has resulted in blood disorders such as anemia

Treatment Choices Based On The Extent Of Stomach Cancer
Treatment of stomach cancer depends largely on where the cancer is in the stomach and how far it has spread. But other factors, such as a persons age, overall health, and preferences, can be important as well.
Stomach cancer typically starts in the inner lining of the stomach. From there, it can grow and spread in different ways. It can grow through the wall of the stomach and into nearby organs. It might also spread to the nearby lymph nodes . As the cancer becomes more advanced, it can travel through the bloodstream or lymph system and spread to organs such as the liver, lungs, and bones, which can make it harder to treat.
Surgery to remove the cancer is typically part of treatment if it can be done, as it offers the best chance for long-term survival. But surgery might not be a good option if the cancer has spread widely or if a person isnt healthy enough for it. Other treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy are often part of treatment as well, either along with or instead of surgery. Newer treatments such as targeted drugs and immunotherapy might be helpful in some situations as well.
Because most people will get different types of treatment for their cancer, its important that a team of doctors review and discuss the best options for treatment. Stomach cancer isnt common in the United States, and it can be challenging to treat, so its important that your cancer care team is experienced in treating stomach cancer.

Stomach Cancer Survival Rates
Survival rates can give you an idea of what percentage of people with the same type and stage of cancer are still alive a certain amount of time after they were diagnosed. They cant tell you how long you will live, but they may help give you a better understanding of how likely it is that your treatment will be successful.
Keep in mind that survival rates are estimates and are often based on previous outcomes of large numbers of people who had a specific cancer, but they cant predict what will happen in any particular persons case. These statistics can be confusing and may lead you to have more questions. Talk with your doctor about how these numbers may apply to you, as he or she is familiar with your situation.
Treating Metastatic Lung Cancer
Treating metastatic lung cancer is challenging. This stage of cancer may continue to spread, and small bits of the disease may linger in the body and cause a recurrence, even if the treatment appears successful. Therefore, treatment will typically focus on extending and bettering life by relieving symptoms and controlling the cancer’s growth. A few things to consider:
- If you have advanced lung cancer, ask your doctor what to expect from treatment.
- You may even want to seek a second opinion from another doctor to ensure youre satisfied with your treatment plan.
- Your care team will weigh the benefits of treatment with the potential side effects and how these may impact your health and well-being.
If the cancer has metastasized to one other siteparticularly the braina typical course of treatment may begin with surgery and radiation therapy to target the area where the cancer spread. Then, the focus shifts to the lung, where treatment may include some combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation .
More often, though, cancers at this stage may be too widespread and require systemic treatments that attack the cancer throughout the body.
The first consideration in choosing a systemic treatment is whether there are specific genetic changes in the primary lung tumor that may be targeted. If so, targeted therapy drugs designed to act on these gene changes would likely be the first choice. Chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or both, also may be options.

Palliative or supportive care can relieve symptoms and improve quality of life. At stage 4, doctors may recommend pain medication, oxygen therapy and respiratory therapies. These treatments control pain and improve lung function.
Many long-term mesothelioma survivors have incorporated complementary and alternative medicine into their stage 4 mesothelioma treatment plan. Certain complementary therapies may improve survival, ease symptoms, reduce treatment side effects and enhance quality of life.

Evaluation Of Prognostic Factors
The multivariate analysis of all patients indicated that surgery and primary site located in antrum & pylorus were related to reduced mortality . In the 81 paired cases, the Cox proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the prognostic factors for overall survival. Surgery was the only independent prognostic factor for OS . The influence of surgery on mortality remained robust with adjustment for age, sex, race, tumor invasion depth, lymph node metastasis and primary site location. The details are illustrated in Figure 3.

Causes Of Stomach Cancer
Stomach cancer is caused by changes in the cells of the stomach, although it’s unclear exactly why these changes occur.
Cancer begins with a change in the structure of the DNA in cells, which can affect how they grow. This means cells grow and reproduce uncontrollably, producing a lump of tissue called a tumour.
Left untreated, cancer can spread to other parts of the body, usually through the lymphatic system .
Once the cancer reaches your lymphatic system, it’s capable of spreading to other parts of your body, including your blood, bones and organs.
It’s not known what triggers the changes in DNA that lead to stomach cancer and why only a small number of people develop the condition.

Stage 1 Colon Cancer Has A Very Good Prognosis And Stage 4 Is Pretty Much A Death Sentence
How long does it take to go from stage 1 to stage 4?
The process of advancing from polyps to cancer can take many years, says Dr. Neil Sengupta, MD, a general gastroenterologist and assistant professor at the University of Chicago, and GI Research Foundation Scholars Award Recipient.
Once a polyp has turned into early stage cancer, it can also be several years before the cancer advances further into stage 4 or metastatic disease, continues Dr. Sengupta.

Stage 4 Uterine Cancer The Critical Stage But Still Treatable
Stage 4 uterine cancer is the riskiest and most afraid of stage of this cancer.
Stage 4 Uterine Cancer
Due to this notion, every patient and even non-patient will not like to reach this kind of stage. Having said this, stage 4 uterine cancer survival rate is very low. Despites its critical condition, it is still a relief to know the fact that this stage is curable. Applying treatment for stage 4 uterine cancer is the only way to survive from this disease.
During this stage, the cancer has already reached other organs of the body aside from the uterus wall. In stage 4 uterine cancer lymph nodes are already affected. How Stomach Cancer Spreads
There are 3 ways stomach cancer can spread:
- directly the cancer can spread from the stomach into nearby tissues and organs, such as the pancreas, colon, small intestine and peritoneum
- through the lymphatic system the lymphatic system is a series of glands located throughout your body, similar to the blood circulatory system the glands produce specialised cells needed by your immune system to fight infection
- through the blood which can cause the cancer to spread from the stomach to other parts of the body, most commonly the liver
Stomach cancer that spreads to another part of the body is known as metastatic stomach cancer.
Location And Type Of Lung Cancer
There are many different types and subtypes of NSCLC, some of which are more aggressive than others. The three most common types are:
- Lung adenocarcinoma, the most common form of the disease that mainly develops in the outer edges of the lungs
- Squamous cell lung carcinoma, which accounts for 25% to 30% of lung cancer cases and develops mainly in the airways
- Large cell lung carcinoma, an uncommon type of NSCLC that can develop anywhere in the lungs and tends to be more aggressive than other types
These characteristics can influence survival times in people with stage 4 NSCLC. Moreover, the location of the tumorwhether in the airways or in lung tissues themselvescan make a big difference in how long a person survives.

Tumor Location: Cardia Vs Non
The incidence of cardia and non-cardia tumors varied significantly depending on gender and ethnic background. 30% of men and 14% of women had gastric ca arising from the cardia. The incidence of cardia cancers also varied significantly across ethnicities. 32% of Whites had cardia primaries, 13% of AA’s, 11% of Asians, and 14% of Hispanics.
Prognostic And Influencing Factors
The univariate and multivariate analyses in our study showed factors related to OS and CSS. In the overall study population, regardless of treatments strategies, the following patients and tumor characteristics were related to better survival : good PS, no evidence of a complicated disease, intestinal type, limited N stage, and limited metastatic spread. This analysis also showed the weight of different treatments. CHT alone and gastrectomy alone had the same effect, while their combination showed the best results.
When considering only those patients who underwent surgery, the following factors showed the best effects on OS and CSS: age< 65yo, no evidence of complicated disease, low N stage, differentiated tumor, and limited metastatic spread. Among the treatments, the determining prognostic factor was the administration of CHT. In our study, it was administered to almost half of the overall sample , obtaining an average increase of survival of 5 more months than the BSC group and showing a synergistic action when combined with gastrectomy.
Conversely, gastrectomy alone, unless emergency procedures are needed, cannot be considered a correct approach to mGC patients, as no significant survival benefits can be expected , and it adds the risk of compromising the administration of systemic CHT.
Mimatsu reported a worse CSS in patients who underwent palliative gastrectomy, with an high mGPS in respect to patients with lower values.

Hi CJS, Have sent you a reply on my thread as you messaged me on there. Just want to reiterate how sorry I am that you are going through this. My heart goes out to you and I totally relate to the fact that you are grieving for your Dad and seeing elements of your Mum’s health that remind you of your Dad. As you know I lost my Dad then my Mum 5 months later and I felt exactly the same. My Mum didn’t know her proper diagnosis, she didn’t want to and it was so hard to try and keep it from her and act like everything was OK. Don’t be hard on yourself, you don’t have to be strong all the time, allow yourself to cry, shout, be angry whatever you feel let it out, it’s not good to keep it in. In quite a few cancers, stage 4 means the cancer has spread to another part of the body to form secondary cancers . As a general rule cancers that have spread are difficult to treat and are unlikely to be cured in the long term, although treatment can help to shrink or control them. Occasionally a cancer that has spread can be cured, but this would depend on the circumstances. An example might be if there was a single secondary cancer that could be removed or destroyed and if no other secondary cancers ever develop in the future.
