Why My Stomach Bloats When I Eat

Tips To Help With Bloating After Eating Bread

Bloated After Eating 10 Reasons Why You Always Feel Bloated After Eating

As a nutritionist in Manchester working with people who are dealing with a range of digestive issues, bloating is one of the most common symptoms I see in my clinic. Its not uncommon for this to happen alongside other digestive symptoms such as:

  • Pain or cramping

However, the bloating itself is often the most annoying and upsetting. Its unpredictable, uncomfortable and can turn eating into a game of Russian roulette.

Slow Down At Mealtime

Eating too fast is a common cause of abdominal bloating because it results in swallowed air. Once that air reaches the intestines, you may feel pain and be bloated. The stomach stretches as you eat and sends signals to the brain alerting you that you are full. However, it takes about 20 minutes for the stomach to alert the brain, so you could be overeating and swallowing lots of air before you feel uncomfortably full. Slow down, chew thoroughly, and enjoy your meals. Drink enough water and stay hydrated to help ensure healthy digestion. Eat slowly to avoid bloating.

Drinking Through A Straw

A straw might make your morning protein shake easier to sip on the run, but it isnt doing your stomach any favors. When you drink through a straw, you also suck air into your stomach, which can increases gas and distention in your digestive tract, says Rumsey. Sip straight from the lid to ward off tummy discomfort.

for some years I realised that eating any form of potato caused me to get severe stomach pain and cramp. I now find other foods are doing this. When I examine the ingredient lists for foods I find potato starch is becoming popular. Many soups, lots of ready meals e.g. m& S mushroom risotto and now gravy granules.

When Should I Be Concerned About A Distended Abdomen

Seek medical care if your abdominal distension:

  • Keeps getting worse and doesnt go away.
  • Comes with severe abdominal pain.
  • Comes with symptoms of illness, such as fever, vomiting or bleeding.
  • Is a chronic problem and you dont know the cause.

A note from Cleveland Clinic

A distended abdomen is often a temporary problem linked to digestion, but it can be uncomfortable, and it can sometimes indicate a serious condition. Theres no need to suffer in silence. If you have a digestive problem, your healthcare provider can help you narrow down causes and strategies for managing it at home. If you have an acute condition that isn’t improving, you should seek care to rule out serious causes. Sometimes a symptom is a blessing in disguise that leads you to treat an unsuspected condition or simply discover a food intolerance.

Put Away The Salt Shaker

By now, you know that eating too much salt can cause a slew of long-term health problems, including high blood pressure. In the short term, an extra salty meal may lead to water retention, which causes bloating.

You can avoid excess sodium in your diet by using flavorful herbs instead of salt, and by reducing the amount of processed and packaged foods you eat.

Should You Cut Out Bread To Stop Bloating

Wheat sensitivity or simply trouble digesting wheat is becoming more common, with symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, vomiting, and stomach pain after eating bread. While an allergy is unlikely to be the cause, bread-related symptoms are real. Cutting out bread and other wheat-containing foods should not harm your health if done properly.

Our Yorktest Survey And Bloating

The University of York conducted a survey** to help understand the benefits of elimination diets based on the results of a food intolerance test.

Out of 576 people who reported bloating as a primary symptom, 92% reported an improvement having removed their trigger foods. We define these as foods which show a positive IgG reaction to antibodies in the blood.

Overall in the study, 76% of people who rigorously followed the recommended diet reported a benefit, 68% of which experienced this after 3 weeks.

How Do Healthcare Providers Treat Abdominal Distension

How To Reduce Bloating | Get Flat Stomach | 10 Reasons Why You’re Bloated

If you seek medical care for your distended abdomen, your healthcare provider will work to isolate the cause. Theyll start by asking you questions about your symptoms and examining your abdomen to see where it’s distended. The location of the outward curve, whether it’s uniform across your abdominal cavity or more pronounced in a particular region, helps them determine which organs are involved and narrow down the list of likely causes. They may also feel the area with their hands or tap it and listen to the sound it makes to determine the presence of fluids, gasses or solids.

The internal organs of the abdomen can be classified as either solid or hollow. Solid organs include the liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenals, pancreas, ovaries and uterus. These can become enlarged due to inflammation or growths such as a tumor, abscess or cyst. Your healthcare provider might be able to feel that they are enlarged, or they might need to look at an image of the internal organs to tell. A large growth might be palpable through the skin. Your healthcare provider will confirm your condition with imaging tests, then follow up with additional testing and treatment depending on the condition.

Gentle yoga poses like Childs pose or Cat/Cow can help relieve abdominal discomfort associated with bloating, Doyle says. This helps to activate your bodys parasympathetic nervous system, or rest and digest mode, which is calming and will allow you to better digest your food.

What Can I Eat On The Low

Certain fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins are higher and lower in FODMAPs. Some are OK to eat in limited amounts but will bother you in larger amounts. For example, most legumes and processed meats are high in FODMAPs, but plain-cooked meats, tofu and eggs are low-FODMAP protein sources. Apples, watermelon and stone fruits are high in FODMAPs, but grapes, strawberries and pineapples are OK. A ripe banana is high in fructose, but you can have up to a third cut up in your cereal, or you can have a whole one if its not quite ripe. Your dietician can help provide you with these kinds of specific guidelines for your diet.

Gas is a natural byproduct of digestion, but too much intestinal gas means your digestion is gone awry. While you can ingest gasses by swallowing air or drinking carbonated beverages, these gasses mostly escape through belching before they reach your intestines. Gasses in your intestines are mostly produced by gut bacteria digesting carbohydrates, in a process called fermentation.

If theres too much fermentation going on, its because too many carbohydrates werent naturally absorbed earlier in the digestive process, before reaching those gut bacteria. That could be for several reasons. Maybe you just ate too much too fast for proper digestion. Or you might have a specific food intolerance or gastrointestinal disease. Some possible causes include:

Digestive Contents

These can include solids, liquids, and gas. Digestive contents can build up in your digestive system when there is a backup or restriction in your digestive tract or when the muscles that move digestive contents along are somehow impaired. Any build-up of digestive contents along the digestive tract will leave less room for normal amounts of gas to process through. It also leaves less room for other things in your abdomen, including circulatory fluids and fat, making everything feel tighter. Causes of build-up can include:

What Can I Do At Home To Prevent Abdominal Distension

Prevention is easier if you know the cause. If you notice that abdominal distension occurs after you eat, you may be able to change your eating habits to prevent it. For example:

  • Identify food sensitivities and change your diet accordingly.
  • Eat smaller amounts more slowly. Wait longer between meals.
  • Drink more water and eat more fiber to prevent the accumulation of waste.
  • Try digestive enzymes and probiotics before meals.

Causes Of Stomach Distension

By paying a little closer attention to your eating habits, you can help prevent excessive bloating. Heres a quick list of sneaky foods and habits that could be to blame:

Gum chewing. Your favorite breath-freshening pastime may be the number one cause for a straining waistband. When you chew gum, you swallow air which gets trapped in the GI system and extends the stomach.

Eating too fast. When you eat a large amount of food in a short period of time, your GI system doesnt have enough time to digest and dispel. A backed up system means a buildup of gas and fluid, causing distension.

Drinking from straws. When you go to sip a drink from a straw, you first suck in a straw-length volume of air, which ends up trapped in your stomach.

Not enough fiberor too much. Fiber is notorious for moving things along. When youre backed up, excess gas in your GI track cant escape, causing you to bloat. Next time you need a snack, reach for fibrous-skinned produce like apples and strawberries. Make sure to go easy on insoluble fibers like beans and lentils. Eating too much of these produces excessive gas.

When To Ask Your Doctor About Bloating

Why you’re bloated (+ how to fix it)?

When to Ask Your Doctor About Bloating. Temporary bloating is common and nothing to worry about. But if youre troubled by bloating on a regular basis, talk to your doctor. Physical obstructions such as scarring of the stomach opening can make it hard for food to pass through the digestive tract normally.

These suggestions will help you get your digestion back on track as quickly as possible, from the best foods to eat to reduce gas to new activities to try.

  • Eat potassium-rich foods, such as asparagus.
  • Take an Epsom salt bath.
  • Roll out your foam roller.
  • Take a magnesium supplement.
  • Food Allergies And Intolerances

Researchers estimate that 15 million people in the U.S. are living with a food allergy. In total, 1 in 5 Americans face food allergies or intolerances. When you eat something youre either allergic to or have an intolerance to, your body releases histamines, compounds that help tame allergy symptoms. The higher concentration of histamines causes your digestive system to produce more gastric acid and increase smooth muscle contractions, and these changes can equal some uncomfortable symptoms, including indigestion and bloating.

How to Prevent It: The only real way to know if you have a food allergy or intolerance is to talk with your doctor. They may order a series of tests to check for allergies or signs of sensitivity to specific foods. These issues cannot be self diagnosed, and you may end up eliminating foods that are healthy and entirely safe for you to eat if you try. Keep a food diary if you suspect food is your bloating culprit. A food diary will help you and your doctor eliminate possible problem foods and identify a list of troublesome options quickly.

It might seem hard to narrow down the culprit, but the more information you can gather about your reactions to different foods and circumstances, the better idea youll have as to what triggers your symptoms, says Josh Axe, D.N.M., C.N.S., D.C., founder of Ancient Nutrition.

Excess Sugar And Salt Could Be In Your Toppings

Remember how Dr. Chutkan said that excess salt and sugar in salad dressing can irritate the gut? The same logic applies for nuts and dried fruits. The sugar can encourage the growth of the wrong kind of bacteria, Dr. Chutkan explains, adding that said bacteria often leads to a higher production of gas.

While nuts are often a good source of healthy fats and protein, depending on how theyre prepared they can be doused in oil or salt, which can be harsh on the stomach. Salt, in particular, can make you puffy and retain more water, adds Dr. Chutkan.

The solution? Swap dried fruits for some fresh papaya, which contains a digestive-aiding enzyme called papain. And if you have a favorite nut or seed, look to buy them raw, unsalted, andâwhenever possibleâsprouted to get the nutrient benefits in their purest form.

How to fix a Bloated Stomach naturally in 4 minutes

While there are trigger goods, bloating after eating bread is very common.

It happens frequently for many people with digestive issues such asIBSbut also in others who do not have this condition. It can still be the case that foods cause bloating even when someone does not have IBS.

The digestive system is a dynamic environment with a wide range of bacteria, digestive enzymes and food particles travelling through it on a daily basis. A common reason for bloating after eating bread, or other wheat containing food, is an imbalance in one of these areas.

In a happy and balanced gut where there are no symptoms of bloating digestive processes are balanced.

To understand this, we can divide the digestive system into 3 main sections, each with a unique role.

    Section 1
The large intestine Fermentation and reabsorption of water

While we want there to be fermentation taking place, we like this to be in the correct part of the digestive tract and in the correct balance.

We see that specific components in bread, such as wheat, can be particularly triggering for bloating.

    But why?

Wheat is high in a specific type of carbohydrate known as fructan which, when added to an imbalance digestive system can lead to bloating. The imbalance outlined above, either too much gas being produced, or not enough being broken down, can happen in 2 sections of the gut.

  • The small intestine.
  • The large intestine.
