To stop bleeding when an injury occurs, platelets along with a complex system of proteins called the “coagulation cascade,” are activated to start the formation of blood clots when an injury occurs.
Cancer can cause the coagulation cascade to be active even when there is no injury present. These clots most commonly form in the large veins of the arms or legs and can break off and travel to the lungs , heart , or brain .
Medications can decrease the risk of a harmful clot from forming. When an unwanted blood clot does form, medications need to be given to stop the clot from getting bigger while your body breaks down the existing clot. These medications either slow down the activity of proteins in the coagulation cascade or decrease the amount of clotting factor proteins in the blood.

How To Cope With Side Effects

Warnings For People With Certain Health Conditions
For people with bleeding problems: If you have abnormal bleeding, dont take this drug. This drug is a blood thinner and may increase your risk of serious bleeding. Talk to your doctor if you have unusual bleeding while taking this drug.

How Should This Medicine Be Used
Hydromorphone comes as a liquid, a tablet, and an extended-release tablet to take by mouth. The liquid is usually taken every 3 to 6 hours and the tablets are usually taken every 4 to 6 hours. The extended-release tablets are taken once daily with or without food. Take hydromorphone at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take hydromorphone exactly as directed.
Do not allow the hydromorphone liquid to touch your skin or clothing. If such contact occurs, remove any clothes exposed to the oral liquid and wash your skin thoroughly with cool water.
